Q: Visual voicemail not working - iphone 5

I've seen this problem posted about a lot but not so much recently. I got a brand new iphone 5 today and it won't connect to Visual Voicemail. I was on the phone for hours with AT&T, and Apple finally told me to return the phone. I upgraded from a 4, and everything was working fine on that. I can dial into voicemail, but messages aren't showing up on my phone. No password prompt, nothing.

Has anyone resolved this recently. I am incredibly frustrated, and afraid that if I bring home another phone it will have the same problem.

Right, your voicemail has to be set up with your carrier first and then if it still does not work then you can try the troubleshooting in this blog.

My problem was when I had it working on my verizon iphone5 and then when I updated to the new IOS-7, the visual voice mail was lost and when I go into voice mail, it asks me if it should dial voicemail and then asks for my password etc etc just like my old non-smartphone used to do.

Mine did the same thing on AT&T. I had to call them and get visual voice mail turned back on. Then after I restared my phone, it work like it did before, no number dialing and no password.

My carrier is Verizon and immediately after we changed the phone numbers on 2 different iPhone 5's, the visual voicemail disappeared.

Just as an fyi: we tried everything....including the hard reset, the network settings, several techs trying to figure it out, new sim cards, and finally.... new iphones.

After 15 phone calls and 20 different people from tech support, we finally found out that the problem is in fact the voicemail program.  I asked the representative what the specific problem was and she said that the person that fixed it had to change some settings with the "voicemail vendor."  This makes me wonder if a 3rd party handles their visual voicemail service?

I sincerely hope this helps someone else...good luck!

If you have an ATT store nearby they can reset VM settings in one click.  My husband and I both upgraded to an iPhone 5s and 5c.  One had no visual voicemail and one could not connect to voicemail.  Five minues in the ATT store and all was fixed -  sure beats hours on the phone.

I found this to work, call your voicemail and change your password, then hang up.  Go to settings->phone->change voicemail password, then type your new password, you'll type it twice, wait about a minute and your visual voice mail should now work.  Hope this helps

There may be a simpler fix - turn the phone app off by double clicking the home button and swiping the phone app up. Then simply restart it by hitting the phone icon again.

This may seem a bit obvious, but it is the only thing that fixed it on my new iPhone 5s.

    Happy New Year all!

Your cellular data has to be on for visual voicemail to work.  That fixed my "video voicemail currently not available".

My carrier is Verizon, and I inadvertantly turned off VIsual Voicemail when I turned Cellular Data off. I turned Cellular Data back on and v'oila, visual voicemail now works again!

Anyone Tried Everything that says on this Post and it's Still Not working for them:

--  Please "Erase and Reset the Phone"  -- go to General - Reset - Erase All Content and Settings

-- After the Phone is Reset -- Set it up as " New Phone "

-- Do NOT Restore Phone through iCloud or iTunes

-- Just " Sync " all your information back in and Set your Settings again

-- That was How I got my Visual Voice Mail to work again

I tried setting the internet-data to ON and after that the iphone voice mails DID start showing up on the screen. Even if e-mail is off but the data is on, the voicemail listing does come on the voice mail screen.

Visual Voicemail does not work with wifi alone. You must have cellular turned on. Works for me.

You have to call your carrier. It is something they have to turn on at their end. Sometimes they charge you extra for it, but usually it is part of your package.

Sometimes they need to give you a number you program into the phone, other times all you need is a default password that they set up that you can change later.

With AT&T I had to call them and they flicked a swtich and had me restart my phone. It worked after that.

Right, and sometimes you need to call your carrier, if they are the ones who manage the passwords at their end.

I experienced the same problem and read through possible solutions posted here and opted to hard reset my phone and it worked.
