Dec 14, 2013 6:07 PM in response to ashhhbeeby Cygnus and Lyra,Hey, I tried setting up the audio and it didn't work until I did some fiddlin around. So when you plug in the hdmi to your tv, in System Preferences>Displays, you should find you tv in that category. Now, open Utilities>Audio HDMI Setup. Bottom right hand corner, click the + button and select Create New Multi-Output Device. Now a new catagory called Multi-Output Device should appear. Click it, select HDMI and check off the box and there you go.

Dec 14, 2013 6:10 PM in response to bister07by Cygnus and Lyra,Hey, check out my previous reply to ashhhbee. This should work. Remember though, when the mac is connected to the tv, it should display the mac desktop, and not be functioning as a second display.

Dec 21, 2013 9:51 AM in response to JasonRay307by netsoup,Thank you so much!
Holding option while clicking on the speaker icon worked for me too, to let me swich audio sources. It's weird the default is not to play sound through the HDMI or give you visible options when you are connected to HDMI.
Thank you again.

Dec 28, 2013 2:35 PM in response to ashhhbeeby jayd94,Go to System Preferences --> Sound --> Output --> Click On The Tv Output. For me I plugged my hdmi from my Macbook Pro to my Samsung Tv. As soon as I clicked on the tv it did not appear as nothing happened. But no sound will come from your laptop but will transfer sound to the tv. Test the sound by playing music to make sure it works.

Jan 1, 2014 12:51 PM in response to kimberlyfrommckinneyby netsoup,Is it displaying the video at least, confirming that the connection is getting through?
If you have video at least, what do you see when you hold down the option (alt) key and click on the speaker icon on the top right bar (by the airplay, bluetooth, etc. icons).
I didn't know this either till I read it here, but when you hold down the option button and click on the speaker icon, instead of volume up/down, you get the input/output selection options.

Jan 1, 2014 12:54 PM in response to netsoupby BobRz,The MBP has to be at least a 2010. Prior to that HDMI didn't carry sound. You'd need another cable from the headphone jack on your Mac to Audio In on the TV.

Jan 1, 2014 1:08 PM in response to BobRzby netsoup,Did they say it was an older macbook? At the very least they should try what i said before assuming it won't work...
Any Macbook with a real HDMI output should play audio just fine through the HDMI the way I said unless it's broken.
I think maybe you are confused and talking about the old miniport to hdmi "adapters", in which case you would be right. Usually anything that is "whatever to hdmi adapter" doesn't carry sound. It seemed like they were using a real hdmi cable.
Sorry for sounding snarky just want to give them a chance to try it before throwing the tip out the window knee-jerk, or confusing unnecessarily.
If it's a real HDMI port and cable, it should carry audio fine and you can hold down the option key to select input/output options.
If it's some sort of display port to hdmi adapter, and doesn't have a real HDMI port like with older macbooks, you're totally right. They'll have to use the audio out.

Jan 1, 2014 5:12 PM in response to netsoupby kimberlyfrommckinney,Yes the video works fine just no sound. I checked and when I "hold down the option (alt) key and click on the speaker icon on the top right bar" my options are "line in and internal speakers" when line in is selected the sound only comes from my laptop not the TV.

Jan 1, 2014 5:14 PM in response to BobRzby kimberlyfrommckinney,Yes that is what I thought too when I use a a VGA cable this is what I did. The same set up does not work with the HDMI cable I have tried using the seperate "headphone jack on your Mac to Audio In on the TV" and still no sound.

Jan 1, 2014 5:18 PM in response to netsoupby kimberlyfrommckinney,OK so no seriously my son plugs in his Macbook pro and it works fine and then two seconds later I plug in mine and no sound video works fine. Smae cable, same adaptor etc. His computer is newer, but he had to reset the PRAM to get sound to work properly. I followed the same procedure...reset PRAM and no dice...or sound
