Q: computer prefers Numbers '09

Okay....I'm not sure how to phrase this properly, so please don't vilify me because my terminology is not correct......

When I download a .csv from the internet and I and ask it to open, my computer defaults to Numbers '09 (and for that matter Pages '09) instead of using Numbers 3.0.1 - I cannot for the life of me figure out why that is happening.

    Hi bigalwood,

Okay....I'm not sure how to phrase this properly, so please don't vilify me because my terminology is not correct......

There is no such thing as a stupid question. Only stupid answers. I hope my answer is not stupid.

my computer defaults to Numbers '09 (and for that matter Pages '09) instead of using Numbers 3.0.1

How refreshing! Most questions in this forum are about Numbers 3.0.1 "taking over" when not wanted!

Is everything working OK when your .csv opens in Numbers '09? If so, don't worry. Do what you need and save your document. Big Bully Numbers 3 will soon be along to convert it!

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Ian.

    Hi Bigalwood,

If you select the CSV file and go:  File > Get Info...  (command + I)

this will open a window with info about the file, about 5th box section down titled Open with: will probably be set to your old version of Numbers 09.  It's a dropdown box, you just need to set it to Numbers 3.x and click the button below Change All...

This should now open CSV's consistantly for you.

    Cheers,

    Dave

    Yellowbox,

You'd be suprised how snarky people can get.....but thanks.

I'm not so much worried about it, I'm just wondering why it happens.  If I already have Numbers 3 open, it automatically opens in that, but if not it pulls up my old Numbers.  Why wouldn't it automatically open in the upgraded version of the program.

And, evidently, I don't know enough about numbers to know why people are not liking the newest version.  Change happens.....get over it, I say.

    Thanks again for being nice.

    Al

    Hi Al,

Change happens.....get over it, I say.

Why wouldn't it automatically open in the upgraded version of the program.

I keep icons (aliases) of both versions of Numbers on my Dock so that I can choose:

    Screen Shot 2014-01-03 at 12.33.38 am.png

Numbers '09 (Numbers 2.3) on the left, three column chart. Numbers '13 (Numbers 3.0.1) on the right, four Column chart. Both versions will run at the same time.

Numbers 3 lives in your Applications folder. Numbers 2.3 lives in a sub-folder called iWork '09 inside your Applications folder. Drag the icons to your Dock. They will become aliases (shortcuts) then right click (or control click) and Options > Keep in Dock.

    Happy Numbering!

    Regards,

    Ian.

P.S. Is everything working OK when your .csv opens in Numbers '09?

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the tip. I must admit that I am a little surprised that Numbers '09 remains the default and we have to set 3.x as the preferred app. Most posts in this forum are about 3.x taking over when not wanted.

Regards, (and if it is not too late on 3 Jan in Australia, Happy New Year).

    Ian.
