Q: Mail (Maverick) deleted but reappears in folder

In Mail (Maverick) I deleted all of the email  in my Junk Mail folder- there was no scroll bar and the entire space where the messages were was white.  I clicked on the trash folder to delete the messages and noticed the Junk folder had 3 next to it so I went back to that folder to check the messages that came.  However, in the junk mail folder, almost all of the messages I had previously deleted had reappeared and mail was deleting them from the Junk Mail folder one by one into the trash folder. I have not seen this before.  I deleted emails from my inbox, selecting multiple emails at a time and did not observe this issue.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 2.4GHz Core i7, 16GB 1333MHz DDR3

Have the same problem, and believe that Gmail is resurrecting the messages so that they reappear in Apple Mail. Would like to delete them on Gmail directly, but cannot find them -- the spam folder on Gmail is empty and I don't see any junk folder. Where do I find the offending messages on Gmail so I can delete them?
