Q: Losing network or internet connection after sleep/wake

I've created this as a new thread as it seems to be more prevalent with Mavericks and the very last update to ML but the problem has been around a while. It does seem to affect all types of Mac though from the other threads I have read and posted to.

The problem is essentially this: Intermittently, after a system sleep, the Mac appears to have no network connectivity (local and internet) and for a while the only reliable solution was to force the renewal of the DHCP lease or turning WiFi off and on again, after which the network would be restored.

There have been several theories postulated and a number of fixes, such as the DHCP renew, suggested but none of them have lasted for long but I now think I have this fixed as the following been 100% stable on my Mac Pro with wired ethernet connection for the last two weeks with no recurrences. I see no reason why this would not work on other Macs or connection types.

The problem seems to lie in the automatic location setting in the network settings, so here's what I did...

  1. Network settings - Location - Edit Locations
  2. Add a new location .. "Home" for example
  3. With home selected, click the cogwheel below the network services and choose "Set Service Order"
  4. Reorder the services so your preferred connection type is at the top
  5. After that, select each service in turn (assuming you have a few - like Bluetooth PAN etc)
  6. Make the services you are not using inactive
  7. Apply

Please post a reply if this works for you - it's been dragging on far too long and needs sorting out by Apple but if this is a good workaround for people then it will certainly do for now.

Hallelujah! It worked. What an annoying problem. I don't usually install a new IOS until most of the kinks are out but broke my own rule, regretably, this time and have been paying for it big time since October. I tried other workarounds but they didn't last. Hopefully this one will. A million thanks.

Have downloaded Mavericks and carried out a clean instal. A bit fidly and time consuming, but so far no dropping out. Hope this is the end of it. Next time new versions OSX are released, I shall be waiting several months before installing!

My problem was that my mac pro early 2008 lost network after i tried to back up to time machine. I figure out that turn off the display sleep and the hard disk sleep and i manage to take a back up. Crazy but true. The next problem is that time machine goes black while entering to it so i turn on mirroring to multiple displays to enter.Mavericks needs an update quickly!

This doesn't work for me. Here's another wrinkle, however: I find that wifi fails to reconnect only when a paired bluetooth device is communicating with my computer (bluetooth icon with 3 dots...). If bluetooth is on, but no devices are communicating (e.g., no mouse, but inactive paired speaker), my macbook re-connects to wifi automatically...

Back to drop outs again after cleanskin installation of Mavericks. Frequency of drop outs less, but still should not happen. Apple has let this problem drag out too long.

I have this same problem with my  2010 iMac 27in which connects over ethernet.

I have tried all the suggested "fixes" to no avail.

This network dropout usually occurs after a fresh boot when the Clock puts up a warning about the date being set to 1901.

My temporary fix is to open network preferences, ethernet, advanced and switch Config IP4 from Manually to Using DHCP and then to Renew DHCP Lease. The network then becomes active again.

Interestingly when I boot into Windows 7 in Boot Camp the network is always active, which just shows it is a Mavericks problem and not a hardware problem.

Mavericks also seems to reset various preferences all on its own without my input. I have to go back and set them back occassionally.

Using Mavericks Cache cleaner to remove all the caches has no effect on this behaviour.

    It is pretty frustrating.

I'm new to the apple discussion forum and my first post was earlier in this thread describing how I "solved" the annyoying problem of losing the Internet connection via ethernet on my iMac after sleep mode by removing and reinserting the ethernet cable.

Although my problem was the same as the rest of you, I later realised that I was on the wrong thread as I was still using Snow Leopard, not Mavericks.  (I see there is also a thread re the same problem using Mountain Lion so it's clearly not solely a Mavericks issue).

I'm posting again today after finally biting the bullet and installing Mavericks recently (no choice, some software I use no longer supported 10.6.8) I have not, SO FAR (very wary of speaking too soon) experienced a loss of Internet connection via Ethernet after waking from sleep mode.

I almost feel like I'm tempting fate writing this post but a) it would be quite ironic if the OS that has caused the problem for others has been the solution for me and b) it deepens the mystery even further since even just going by this thread it shows there is no "one size fits all" solution to this.

My new frustration since the upgrade is that scanner of my laser printer/scanner Canon 1235cn no longer works and for this it would appear that the solution may be more drastic - a new scanner since neither Apple nor Canon provides the necessary drivers. But that's an issue for another thread.

In a nutshell, "as one problem closes, another one opens"!!

Before giving up on your scanner I suggest you give Vuescan a try. I have an "unsupported" SCSI Canon film scanner which works fine with Vuescan under Mavericks. What is even better is that the developer is very supportive.

Thanks pillat5dock but sadly Vuescan says the same as Image Capture, that there's no scanner connected. Luckily I can still print (it's a combi printer/scanner). From the forums here I understand the non-recognition of scanners is a common issue with Mavericks (to which there is so far no solution). But thanks anyway, I appreciate your trying to help.

I'll join in on the 'thank you's'!  This problem drove me nuts and your method fixed my issue.

Many many thanks for the countless times I won't have to turn my wifi on and off to get my signal back!

    Thanx!

this solution might have worked for me after trying several other solutions.

but also might be only the temporary one like many others.

will post if this solution keeps working and prevents my MBA from disconnecting.

Thanks for the idea but I am afraid it didnt work at all for me.  Still drops out every second, constantly cycling through connect and disconnect.  Only connects to the internet for a second at a time.  Totaly useless, I cant connect any other devices cant transfer files.  Apple needs to get this sorted.  I am reverting to Mountain Lion this weekend.

The suggested solution using a separate network location, didn't work for me either, but although it's sort of a dodgy solution I found something that did: Making my MacBook Pro (13" with Retina, late 2013) use the "personal hotspot" feature on my iPhone.

    So my current setup is:

    • iPhone connected to WiFi.
    • Personal hotspot enabled on iPhone.
    • MBP connected to iPhone's personal hotspot.
    • Magic Trackpad connected via bluetooth to the MBP.

Also, to avoid draining the battery of my iPhone, I've connected the iPhone to my external display via USB. I've been using the above setup for the last couple of days and have no issues to report yet.

I've had my MBP since the beginning of January and it's been running without any problems whatsoever. The network began acting up last Thursday (January 20th).
