      I hope 10.9 is not going to force me to upgrade iMovie and things like Aperture, do you know if that's the case?

    In the cases, where the new Mavericks versions are very different and do not yet offer the full support like the older versions, the installer moved the older version of the app to a subfolder of applications.

    If you see that happen, don't uninstall the older version. In these cases both versions are compatible with the system, e.g. the iWork apps (Pages, Keynote, Numbers), iMovie, GarageBand.
