Q: Mac OS X 10.9.1 Mail 7.1 doesn't show gmail messages (empty content)

Hello everyone,

Just switched to Maverick, installed 10.9.1 which is said to fix gmail issue, and yet gmail messages are not displayed (don't know if it was that issue or this is a new one). Any idea how to fix this?

Thanks,

Alexander

You are absolutely right. After updating to version 10.9.1 my problems with Mail exploded:

    - missing mails in my Gmail inbox. They simply do not arrive on my mac

    - mail folders that remain empty: I have to manually select them and choose "Rebuild" from the mailbox menu

    - continuous connection issues with my Exchange account

    - impossible to re-add a removed Exchange account in the System Preferences Account menu ("An error occurred" Very helpful)

Instead of improving, the situation gets worse. At this point, Mail is completely unusual to me.

Some problems were fixed, some not. As I understand it it is the fault of google as they are using a non-standard IMAP protocoll. The way I fixed it, diaable all those labels in gmail and just have the basics.

    Hi Norbertmuc,

Thanks for suggestion, not sure though what exactly helped, but not now it works! I disabled some gmail labels, then went to mail, mails were not shown again. But then I deleted and recreated mailbox with Google account type (I don't think I used that type initially as I have my own domain not @gmail.com), and then it works!

    Thanks again!

Have the exact same problem with 1 of my 4 Gmail accounts.  They show up on both my iPad Air and iPhone 5 but not on my iMac running 10.9.1 and mail 7.1 (1827).

Not sure how to fix it.

I'm having the same problem. What did you do? Disable labels? Where did you find these?

    Thanks!

One thing I did yesterday which seems to be working today is going to Preferences in Mail and unchecking "enable this account", clsoe out Mail, and restart, then rechecking this box for the particular GMail account.

Today I am getting my emails.

For me, the problem is partially due to the new inboxes Social, Promotions, etc that Gmail created. I have disabled that feature on the Gmail website.

OK...I have tried Russ & Toms's suggestions above but the same results.   Interestingly after I unchecked all those Google app's my Gmail mailbox suddenly filled with all kinds of emails that didn't normally show up when I went in through Google.   The option to rebuild a mailbox is greyed out.  Also my wife is reporting that she can't send any msgs this morning...there's got to be a better way!

    Any more ideas...billgr?

I suspect this problem is not with Gmail or changes Gmail has made recently:

I have 2 loaded iMacs, 2 Mac Airs, and a Macbook Pro with Retina, and 2 iPads, and an iPhone.

I have confirmed on all my iPad and iPhone devices that all my Gmail content is visible, and installing Thunderbird on the iMacs and MacBooks accesses Gmail and the sub-directories.

However, MAIL on the iMacs and MacBooks fails to access the Gmail sub-directory contents dated pre-OSX installation.  I have kept everything updated.

PERHAPS NEW INFO TO THIS THREAD: Also, current Time Machine backups fail to show Gmail IMAP sub-directory contents dated pre-OSX installation as well, so this problem appears to be OSX UNIVERSAL not just affecting MAIL. (on one iMac, Mavericks trashed my Time Machine drive (Pegasus - but the company responded quickly with a fix but I lost all the backups). My other iMac (I have one at home, another at work) has a pre-OSX Time Machine backup still that Mavericks has not yet trashed (although it has tried in various ways). The pre-OSX backups show all my Gmail messages in all directories... but post-OSX install the directories show as empty.

Performing a 'Get Account Info' via MAIL 'sometimes' shows a correct Gmail sub-diertory message count, 'sometimes' does not, and 'sometimes fails to report the even the sub-directory name or stats.  BUT, doing Show Messages, even whent the message count shows correct, displays an empty directory, or only those messages post-OSX install.

As someone posted earlier, go to 'MAIL' and select 'Provide Feedback' and bombard Apple Support with a bug report.

PS. Thunderbird will not install an iCloud account in IMAP for me, even a manual config from settings in MAIL don't work, and Thunderbird won't 'Import Settings' or 'accounts' or 'folders' or 'Local mail' from MAIL under Mavericks either it seems... reports Info Not Found.

PSS. installing an iCloud account did nothing useful to these problems, and in fact I had to go online into iCloud via the web to create a subdirectory before MAIL or even the iPads etc would see more than the iCloud Inbox.

PSSS. to get MAIL to refresh the Gmail Inbox, I have to shutdown MAIL and re-open it (and sometimes, MAIL takes a long time to shutdown as well).

    I FIXED THIS PROBLEM!!!

When I updated I couldnt get my inbox, emails were not syncing, but were showing up in "All Mail" which was quite annoying.  I completely deleted my gmail account from Mail (I tried to do it through preferences but it redirected me to Internet Accounts in System Preferences).  I completely removed my gmail account and re-entered my information by clicking on a google account.  Immediately my emails showed up in my inbox.

    Hope this helps.

James' solution above was the trick that fixed my wife's missing GMail problem.  De-enabling and then re-enabling the account in Mail Preferences brought everything back to normal.  Good tip, James!

    Iceman,

Problem is you have to do this every few days as Mail seems to "forget" this.
