Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. If you're unable to shut down or restart your computer because an app is preventing the shutdown from completing, you can force your Mac to turn off as described here:
OS X Mavericks: Using the power button
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5869
Forcing the Mac to Turn Off
Hold down the power button for 5 seconds to force the computer to turn off. Important: You may lose unsaved documents if you force the computer to turn off this way. Use this method of turning off your Mac only if it has become unresponsive for an extended period of time. Normally you should shut down the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu, or from the shut down dialog pictured above.
If this is what you're doing and the issue is repeating itself each time you need to shut down, please reply with any additional information such as any other error messages or strange behavior.
Cheers,
- Ari

Jan 8, 2014 11:17 AM in response to ariel sby TmanfromRSA,Thanks Ari,
I took my Mac into the Apple store where they did a force exit of the mail app. My mails are working now, but they couldnt diagnose why the app did that though. The person that helped me said they have been receiving a lot of complaints regarding this problem. I would think that they would be looking for a solution (other than force quiting the whole time).
I will keep you up to date if this problem arises again.
Thanks though
