The Time Capsule can "extend" a network wirelessly that has been created by another Apple router. Extremely unlikely that the Time Capsule could "extend" a network created by a router from another manufacturer.

Does your network meet that basic requirement?

If yes, what model of Apple AirPort router do you have?

If you are not sure, check the bottom of the device to locate the model number.....which starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.

The Time Capsule is an A1470.  I was indeed trying to connect to an existing non-apple network, but I would be just as happy if I could get the thing to merely join the non-apple network.

I doubt that this would work.

Best bet is to connect the Time Capsule to your existing wireless router using an Ethernet cable. Connect from one of the LAN <-> ports on the wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
