Q: Import DREADFULLY SLOW after update.

Hey everyone... I kicked the tires around on 10.1 on one of my machines and loved all the changes.  Took a little while to get used to, but now love how it's all set up.   Figured I'd hit a snag eventually though and I think what I'm experiencing now is a major snag.

I'm trying to import AVCHD files, as usual, into an event.  I always 'Optimize' media.  In the past, before the update, 2 hours of footage would take about real-time to import.  Maybe a little longer (3 hours tops).  I'm trying to import about 20 minutes worth of footage now, and it's been at it for over four hours now.  In fact, the vast majority of the footage are clips no longer than 15 seconds long.  It's been working on a 13 second clip for the last 2 hours now.  With about a 100 or so other clips left to import, I can only imagine how long this is going to take.

Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?  I suspect there's a new way of importing that I'm completely missing.  And yes, I have the 'prevent app nap' function checked (that was a major pain after the last update... but a non-issue now).

Any feedback about my issue would be appreciated.

I'm working on a 2.93 quad i7 with 8GB of Ram.  Exporting the AVCHD files from an external drive directly onto my iMac's hard disk.  I know, I know... a lot of you recommend not doing that.  But I've been doing it for 12 years with no issues what-so-ever and although I use a variety of external solutions for editing longer projects, I like to use my computers storage from time to time for smaller projects (like this one).  I suspect I'd have the same problem if I tried to import to an exernal drive anyway.

I've seemed to have found the solution to this.  I trashed all of my preferences using Preference Manager, restarted, and FCPX is humming again with imports.

Must have just been a snag with preferences in there after updating to 10.1.

I trashed the preferences and import is still wretchedly slow.  I'm hoping there is another fix?  Like 10.1.1?  I've run into other problems like the mouse not responding to clicks, the skimming not working and such.

Plus the finder in Mavericks hangs up and doesn't allow file renames without closing the window and reopen it.

<sigh> I should've waited for the x.x.1 revision of each.

Did you check that box to 'Prevent App Nap'?  Go to the FCX application icon in your Applications folder.  Highlights it and select 'Get Info' from the file menu.  You'll see the check box there.  Make sure it's checked off... otherwise you'll have neverending imports.   If you did the last update before 10.1, you would have experienced this problem already.  But that update was just a couple months ago, if that, so I suspect maybe you didn't update it yet until now.

I could be wrong... so, just a hunch.

Yes, I disabled App Nap.  It prevented FCPX from crashing during final rendering.  That was an improvement.

Cool... if you haven't done so already after checking off that box, restart your computer and then try another import.  Hopefully it works like normal again.
