Q: can anyone tell me why my Macbook pro keeps crashing

This is the first report I've had.

I was thinking it was due to me putting my iPhoto on an external drive but it still crashes when this is unplugged.

I also have trouble getting back in - booted up  - often taking 3 or 4 goes!!

Its been doing it for two weeks now and I've only managed to run the Disk Utility check and repair but to no avail.

I have only had a mac for a short time so don't understand how I can fix things - please, someone, help!!!

Thank you

J

    I have now got hold of the original box for my Mac and I can only find two discs.

    The first is a "15-inch MacBook Pro Mac OS X Install DVD" and the other is "15-inch MacBook Pro Applications Install DVD". Do either of these hold that hardware test you were talking about. I'm still a little nervous about doing 'out of the odinary' stuff like inserting DVDs etc!! I have had a couple of crashes since last posting and neither time can I restart using the on button and 'shift' 's' or 'r' keys.

    What next do you think?!

    Thanks

    Look on the face of the DVD for:

    "To use Apple diagnostics, insert this disc and restart while holding down the D key"

    John,

    yes, two discs are all that came with it — it’s the Applications Install DVD that has the Apple Hardware Test. There’s no need to be nervous; it can’t hurt to try booting from that DVD. As Grant Bennet-Alder pointed out, insert the Applications Install DVD into your SuperDrive, and hold down the D key while starting up. Don’t hold down a Command key or a Shift key at the same time — just the D key.

    Hello again - OK, some good and bad news I guess!!

    I managed to get the Mac to boot up with the disc in and ran the diagnostic on the Hardware.

    After about 20 minutes it came back with the report that all was OK and that nothing needed attention.

    The bad news is that it is still crashing. I couldn't get it to start after running the disc. I tried just power, power plus 'shift', power plus 'r' and power plus 's' - none of which worked. Power 'r' gave me a progress band that got about 2 thirds along and then it stopped.

    I really don't know what next other than booking it in to the Genius bar sometime. Again, I lean on you guys for any possible help here - any ideas!!

    Thanks

    Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore

    essentially, all of them.

    what you want to see is "Permissions Repair complete" Then you have done all that can be done.

    John,

    it seems as though it’s time to try “the nuclear option” — to reïnstall OS X onto your internal drive. Since you have Time Machine backups, you could:

    1. Boot from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD (by pressing just the C key as your MacBook Pro starts up with it in the SuperDrive);
    2. Use its Disk Utility to erase your internal drive;
    3. Reïnstall Snow Leopard from that DVD onto your internal drive, and reboot from the internal drive;
    4. Optionally reïnstall the apps that are on your grey Applications Install DVD;
    5. Run Software Update on your internal drive to get it to 10.6.8;
    6. Reïnstall Mavericks, and reboot into Mavericks;
    7. Run Software Update again; and
    8. Restore from your Time Machine backups.

    If that doesn’t do the trick, then a visit to the Genius bar might be in order, to rule out problems with your MacBook Pro’s logic board.

    Thank you so much for all your help on this, you have been a star.

    For your information, as I was passing and Apple Store yesterday, I took it in for a quick diagnostic check and they could not see anything immediately. I had backed it up, and they suggested that I leave it with them to do a full check. They are going to check the graphics board (?) as I am getting blue screen, white screen and all sorts of other things! They said that the advice I have received so far had been excellent, exactly what they would have done themselves, and have reiterated that the next step may well be to wipe the Mac and reload via Time Machine. I will keep you posted, and will no doubt be asking for more answers should I have problems rebuilding my Mac.

    Once again, thank you very much for all your help so far.

    Johnny,

    I know it has been some years since you posted this issue, but did you ever find a resolution? I have searched all over trying to find my similar problem and your thread was the only one I could find with the same issues I was having. Apple did a "deep dive" diagnostic of my computer and said the hard drive was bad. I replaced the drive and started fresh completely, no migration, no time machine and STILL get the same issues.

    After weeks of issues I finally got my first "crash report" and the spinlock acquisition time out lead me to your thread.

    Would love to know if you found a good resolution.

    Thanks!
