In addition to reviewing the online help, I recommend that you try the following:

Paid Option (but very reliable, and fast turnaround)

    • If you don't mind paying for access and want to jumpstart your experience you could head over to www.lynda.com and check out the  course titled: iBooks Author Essential Training with Chris Mattia

Free Option (much less reliable, and slower process)

    • Search Youtube and Google for "iBooks Author" and review the various tips (mileage will vary)
    • Review the discussions in this forum / ask questions

Once you have a handle on the basics you will want to review the following:

There are many free tutorial type books for iBooks Author in teh iBooks store.. search and  download them.

"Create your first interactive book with iBooks Author" by iBook-Widgets is a very useful tutorial.

If you have an iTunes Connect account, open it and select "Deliver your Content".

Top right are a number of PDFs to download - get all and read them.

Below that is a Keynote video which lasts about 1 hour and is very good at showing you the ins and outs of the application and what it can do.

Finally I suggect you forget about taking on Stephen Kind and  open a blank  template. save it as Test or  whatever and leanrn how to alter and change things.

Go through every iBA menu option and learn what it does.

With iBA open, look at the left column which shows the chapters, sections and pages in your  new test book.
At the  top you will see  "Book" to  its right are two horzontal lines, left click on them and drag the  slider down to reveal template pages.

This is where you can redesign the template to suit you.  Anything that you cannot move, select it, go to ARANGE > unlock. Never lock  text boxes or image placeholders.. or you cannot use them!

Get your images formatted to the correct type and size.. see the asset guide you will download!

And when you feel comfortable.. then you can start with your project.

Too many just open iBA and start writing or dropping images in and  cause havoc for them selves.
