Q: Mavericks installed, now thunderbolt ethernet doesn't online after waking from sleep

Mid 2012 Retina Macbook Pro, 15 inch - as title suggests, after recently installing Mavericks from the app store + doing an upgrade install, the thunderbolt ethernet adapter no longer comes back online after the laptop wakes from sleep. System Information shows that the device is present and connected, it just won't bring the network interface up, so I have to disconnect + reconnect the adapter to get networking back up.

Wifi works fine, no problems there.

Anyone else encountered a similar issue?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

    Same problem as everyone else but it is even worse. My Thunderbolt-Ethernet connection drops away on my brand new late 2013 MBP 13inch randomly even while using it. If I don't use the network it is for sure the connection drops away and all my file shares disconnect. Indeed one needs to quickly pull the 30 euro thunderbolt-ethernet connector and put it back, quite annoying. Maybe Apple can look into this.

    I am having the same issue on one of my MacBook Pros. My MBP (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) will not link at all using an Apple Thunderbolt adapter. Not with DHCP IP, static IP, auto IPv6, Link-Local only or manual IPv6. I simply can not use wired ethernet with this laptop.

    My wife's MBP (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) does not exhibit this problem with the same Thunderbolt adapter. It links up immediately using DHCP and works after the computer has been sleep.

    same problem on iMac 27 with an external Thunderbolt drive used for large files fast access and Time Machine-

    Thunderbolt HDD no longer powers up after resuming;

    tons of users reporting Thunderbolt displays bug as well!

    last update completely messed Thunderbolt port wake up-

    Apple to fix in a future patch... just wait (this is unacceptable from Apple ... IMHO)

    I am opening a bug report every single day and encourage you all to do the same;

    this is the only way Apple starts working on this UNTESTED feature they introduced in Mavericks latest release.

    All the best for 2014 - eg. a solid Mavericks patch...ASAP!

    Was given a working solution by a savvy friend-

    Here it is:

    - Disk Utility, check permissions then repair permissions

    - Open Finder, Library (Alt-Go), Caches

    - Move ALL subfolders to trash

    - shutdown

    - press ALT, CMD, R and P keys while poweting up, until screen flicks

    - let it boot normally

    - empty trash !

    DONE - problem solved !  Thuderbolt devices go to power saving AND restart!!!

    sorry to hear that nothing worked for you-

    is there a possibility for you to try a different Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter ?

    Apple Store Genius Bar would be a great place to try that with some assistance and SHOW the issue to Apple.

    Hi Bruno-

    I don't think it's an issue with his gigabit adaptor - as it seems like lots of people have the same problem. I was able to exclude this a possible explanation for me as I have tried both Apple's thunderbolt to gigabit adaptor and the gigabit found on a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock - both fail to wake from sleep. So definitely an OS problem IMHO.

    Has anyone else had success with clearing the driver cache and PRAM reset?

    I don't think the Geniuses will be able to add much to the problem - I would recommend that people let Apple know directly: http://www.apple.com/feedback (see suggested message below)

    Cheers, Jon

    <snip>

    Dear Apple,

    I have a <your machine> bought in <month year>. I have installed Mavericks and found a problem with connecting to a wired network using an Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit adaptor. Whenever I wake my computer from sleep the network connection is not re-established. Note that this appears to be a problem when using a static IP address, and is only solved by either unplugging and replugging the network cable, or switching the Location (i.e. Office->Home->Office).

    Several other people seem to be having this problem, see here:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24377630?ac_cid=tw123456#24377630?ac_cid=t w123456

    Please can you let me know when this issue is likely to be fixed?

    Best wishes,

    <disgruntled Apple customer>

    Hi all,

    I will refrain from repeating only what's been said already.  I've a 2013 MBP(2.6GHz), running 10.9.1.  I have the same exact problem.  but to add a twist, I tested my USB ethernet dongle from my old MBA.  Plugged it in right next to the gig adapter and it worked perfectly.  I reverted back to the gig adapter and it provided me the same dissatisfaction...

    @ Angrypanda...

    i will plagirize your template!

    cheers :-)

    I have solved my problem with a work around. First I cleared the driver cache and did a PRAM reset.  Then I decided to go with wifi from Time capsule. I changed the time capsule to a static IP address due to office network specifics. I have had no further issues. But this is a work around and I still have the issue if trying to use thunderbolt adapter.

    Er - that's a bit like saying "I bought a new computer and the problem went away."

    AFAIK this problem is here to stay until Apple do something.

    Dear The Terral,

    That is interesting. This whole sorry tale doesn't say much for Apple's QA protocols. I would urge everyone on this discussion thread to fill in the feedback form (see message above) and raise this with Apple directly.

    Cheers, Jon

    I can't alter my original post sadly (HK's solution did not in fact fix the problem after some testing), so I might as well update with my own circumstances.

    I have a small set of locations set up in Mavericks to let me switch between the following configs:

    Network 1 Thunderbolt - static IP

    Network 1 Wifi - static IP

    Network 2 Thunderbolt- static IP

    Network 2 Wifi- static IP

    Automatic (just connect to anything, wired or wireless, DHCP)

    Generally I want to use either Network 1 or 2 through Thunderbolt for 95% ~ of my time so that's what I've been testing. Wifi appears to be pretty solid, no problems with that reconnecting after sleep in any tests.

    When connected to AC power: Thunderbolt NIC will wake from sleep and bring the link up OK.

    This is my best 'workaround' for the issue - just leave the macbook connected to mains power constantly and try not to think about the long term ill-effects it does to the battery conditioning (Also it ties up one of the limited plug sockets around here)

    When running on battery: Thunderbolt NIC will *not* bring the link up after waking from sleep. Sometimes changing the network location to something else, then back to the one I was previously working will cause the link to come back up. Sometimes it doesn't however, and I am left to physically disconnect and reconnect the thunderbolt adapter.

    Same issue on my MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013 + Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet Adapter.

    Waiting for an Apple fix . .

    I've set a shell script that switch off ad on the Ethernet controller. And then I've transformed it in an application to have a double-click solution (to do that use Platypus or Appify.)

    ---

    #!/bin/sh

    sudo /usr/sbin/networksetup -setnetworkserviceenabled "Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller" off &> /dev/null

    sudo /usr/sbin/networksetup -setnetworkserviceenabled "Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller" on &> /dev/null

    ---

    It need root privileges, so it will ask for your password every time. I've changed the "/etc/sudoers" file (not racommanded!), not to be bothered by password requests, appendig this raw:

      %staff ALL = (root) NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/networksetup

    You could have a different network service name..

    On command line try first:    networksetup -listallnetworkservices

    I know! It is not an elegant solution, but to avoid disconnecting the cable every time..
