I just found out that Remote app (free app) on my iphone can wake up my iMac from sleep as long as I'm on same wifi. Then one can use other apps such as Quikio or logmein to access the computer.

there may still be a way to do what you want. however, it would require an ethernet cable and forking out some $$ for a new airport extreme
integrate that baby into your network and run an ethernet cable from your media server to it. turn off airport on the machine with iTunes and, voila, you should be able to wakethat machine +for network access+
I have this setup, an AirPort Extreme wired to my iMac. And it does work. But in my experience, you have one thing wrong here:
I found that WiFi must be on on any Mac you want to wake from sleep with Remote.app on an iPhone or iPad. (I'm guessing that when you wrote "turn off airport" you meant WiFi.)
