Jan 11, 2014 11:28 AM in response to akromeby Bob Timmons,You might want to open up AirPort Utility and click on the amber dot to see if the flashing amber light is something simple....like a message that a firmware update is available for the AirPort Express.
Or...have you already done that....and you see specific error message that the AirPort Express is not extending the wireless network?
We assume that you have another Apple router that is providing the network to be exended. Is that correct?

Jan 11, 2014 11:30 AM in response to akromeby Tesserax,What is the exact models of both your AirPort Extreme and Express base stations? Did you happen to perform a "factory default" reset on BOTH base stations BEFORE attempting to configure them for an extended network?

Jan 11, 2014 2:55 PM in response to Tesseraxby Willw198,I have a similar issue. I have an new extreme. I just bought an express to hook up with an Ethernet cable from the extreme so I can get strong signal strength in a few areas of the house. Can you walk me through the process. When I plugged in and just use the default extend mode the signal strength does not appear to be any stronger in the areas of the house which had poor reception before.

Jan 11, 2014 3:05 PM in response to Willw198by Tesserax,In the cases where the AirPort base stations would be interconnected by Ethernet you want to configure then for a roaming network, NOT an extended network. Apple uses the term "extended" when the base stations use wireless connection. Regardless of naming convention the end results is pretty much the same.
The link I provided should provide you with the necessary steps to set this type of network up.
