you should select “Shut Down…” from the Apple menu to safely shut down your MacBook Pro. Pressing the power button for ten seconds to shut down your MacBook Pro should only be done as a last resort.

If you press it and hold for 1-2 seconds, the "old menu" pops up and asks you what you want to do. If you press it and hold for 8-10 seconds, it performs an immediate hard power down.
