i just upgraded my iMac to OSX Mavericks, had virtual box 4.2.16 woking very smoothly. After the upgrade is stopped working. can anyone help me? thanks

Try upgrading VirtualBox. You should always run the latest version of these kinds of applications.
VirtualBox is currently at 4.3.6.
From personal experience, VB 4.3.6 works well on Mavericks, and the update process is simple and quick.

Did you google VirtualBox?
Once you have these downloaded, make certain that you have exited from VirtualBox.
Next to your Trash icon, is a Downloads icon. Click once, and then single-click item 2.1 to launch and execute the installer.
Start VirtualBox without any guests running. Look for item 2.2 in your Downloads icon list, and single-click it. VirtualBox will sense its presence and offer to upgrade your Extension Pack. Do it.
Once you have your VirtualBox guest running, update your guest additions in that guest to v4.3.6 via the VirtualBox Devices menu. When done, reboot your guest.
Update is done.
Though unplanned, I always keep the last updated VirtualBox version installer handy as it has the comprehensive uninstaller within it.
