You are right that won't fix my particular problem but at least they tried to help and were not rude. I thought this was a support forum afterall.
This is a technical support forum, not an emotional support forum. And Kilted Tim gave the correct information. That is the very definition of technical support.

Jan 12, 2014 2:46 PM in response to Meg St._Clairby CP1024,Apart from itallicizing the wrong word for emphasis you fail to acknowledge the main point of the post kilted tim had a long standing history of giving snotty, and arrogant time in his posts. Although he's nicer than some "Geniuses". I'm with the trace70. Stop wasting everybody's time withall of these lame, non technical posts.

No, I italicized precisely the word I meant to. KT, based on the number of points he has, has a long history of successfully helping people. I do not see any evidence that you've managed to help nearly as many.
Best of luck.

Jan 15, 2014 3:57 PM in response to KiltedTimby oeteman,Hi there,
Thought I would chime in here. I WAS able to take an Iphone I purchased on Craigslist to the Apple store, and they were able to bypass it, eventhough it was still linked to the user's Apple ID. Take a trip down to your local Apple store and you'd be suprised at their great customer service. They're always trying to help
Goodluck!

Jan 15, 2014 4:15 PM in response to oetemanby KiltedTim,For the sake of anyone who might ever have an iPhone stolen, I hope you're lying. At the very least, I hope the employee who did it gets written up, if not fired.
That defeats the entire purpose of the activation lock.

Jan 18, 2014 12:47 PM in response to KiltedTimby thetrace70,★HelpfulOk so an update...
I did speak to Technical Support at Apple who were very helpful, polite and gave a few suggestions for me to try. They will not bypass a linked Apple ID and quite rightly so.
I have followed Apple's suggestion and now have a completely factory reset iphone which incidently was not stolen, not everyone who buys a second (or third) hand phone is handling stolen bricks.
So a happy ending for me thanks to Apple's technical support

Feb 21, 2014 12:05 PM in response to thetrace70by spyteris,trace70, I would love to know what was suggested by Apple on this issue also. The original owner is known, but unwilling to go through the unlock steps on icloud.com/#find.
Thanks for sharing !

Feb 21, 2014 12:13 PM in response to spyterisby KiltedTim,If the original owner is known, but unwilling to unlock it, WHY are they unwilling to do so?
If they ARE the original owner, then odds are the phone was stolen from them. Otherwise, that's a pretty darned good indication that they are NOT in fact, the original owner, but that they actually stole it.
If they ARE and are unwilling to unlock it and are unwilling to give you your money back, involve the police or call a lawyer. It's not Apple's problem.

May 4, 2014 3:30 AM in response to thetrace70by Acaenum, glad you got your legit phone fixed.
i am a victim of theft. Lost iphone4s sometime in Dec 2013, in UAE, and in Feb 2014, someone from India calls me - saying sir, i just purchased this iphone from a street vendor, and it is not allowing me to activate it. can i have your login details please.
i did activate find iphone option and set it in lost mode, so they got my phone number.
they offered to pay some cash (10% value) in return of the phone - as a matter of principle, i asked them to return it to the police. they called back 3 times - i stood my ground.
it is May 2014, and i am glad my phone is a brick - if Apple ever helps them recover the phone - i will be very upset. I also keep sigining in once in month just to make sure the lost device is indeed in lost mode!
so thank you very much Apple - keep it simple and sensible!

May 18, 2014 9:26 AM in response to iMurad07by powpee,Hey there! I apologize for butting in..but I'd like to share my own story related to this inquiry..
I bought a second-hand iphone4s from a friend..indeed he had linked it to his appleid! I understand the purpose of the activation lock..discussed it with him (because it seemed like he wasn't aware about it) and asked him to activate the device for me. I was taken aback when I learned that he forgot his apple id login..I mean..who does that? One thing is u practically use everytime u buy something from iTunes or from the App Store...sigh!
We tried to reset the pw but what was more depressing was that he failed multiple times up to the point where the appleid got disabled. Tried to do it for him and I've found out a few things..one, after it gor disabled signing in to appleid.apple.com would only refer u to reset pw at iforgot.apple.com and when we tried to send a password reset link to the email he indicated on his file, the site did not show to which email it was sent to..
As of this writting, we are trying to crack it by answering his security questions but I fear for the worst..
..any thoughts guys?!

Jul 5, 2014 1:59 AM in response to KiltedTimby Dorutu,Its seems to be pretty logic what you are saying.

Jul 5, 2014 4:59 AM in response to Dorutuby KiltedTim,No. You can not do anything with it other than use it as a paper weight or doorstop.

Jul 16, 2014 12:51 PM in response to iMurad07by Bjean71,Okay, what are you to do if the previous owner is deceased? I got this phone from his wife - she doesn't know any of his passwords or anything, he was the one that purchased them from AT&T over the phone.... Then what do you do??
