I have an old Clarisworks spreadsheet that I created prior to upgrading to Mavericks.  I would like to open it into the newest Numbers application if possible.  I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how to do so.

Thanks

The new Apps do not open ClarisWorks files.

LibreOffice may so you can convert it to .doc or Excel files then open those.

    Hello,

LibreOffice 4.1 is only able to open AppleWorks/ClarisWorks word processing files ( and draw/paint files with mitigated success). LibreOffice 4.2 will be able to open the same kinds of files but the import of the graphic shapes will be a lot improved (but not perfect) and it will recognize more bitmaps and some embedded spreadsheets.

So, for a ClarisWorks spreadsheet file (see http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/aw/page4.html ), the easier solution is probably to find an old mac which can run AppleWorks ( and then convert your file to Excel, ... ) or to use some emulator to run AppleWorks or ClarisWorks.

Ps: It is possible that mwawCSVOSX.zip in http://sourceforge.net/projects/libmwaw/files can convert the main content of your file in CSV, but I only test it on a small set of files, its interface is very crude, it is only able the retrieve the cells' content ( but not the formula, the chart, ... ) :-~

    Thanks fosnola

Have you tested that on a range/versions of Appleworks/Clarisworks files?

    Including pure spreadsheet documents?

If you can give me either samples or a test set result matrix, I'll add it to iWorkTipsnTricks' AppleWorks section.

There are many users in this bind and it would be nice if they had a solution, even if only partial.

    Hello Peter,

I am one of the writer of the filter that LibreOffice uses to import the AppleWorks/ClarisWorks files ( and I have a lot of old AppleWorks/ClarisWorks files to do testing). Thus I have a good idea of what is implemented and what is not implemented ; of course, it alway remains the possibility that some files contain some caracteristics that can make the filter err, caracteristics that I have never seen :-~

         So normally,

    • concerning the word processing files, it must open all Mac files ( it can also open some files created by the Windows versions, but I have a small set of such files, so it may fails on some :-~ ).
    • concerning the draw files, it must open all Mac files, but the quality of the conversion in LibreOffice 4.1 is often very poor. It will be better in LibreOffice 4.2 but far from perfect.
    • concerning the paint files°, it must open all Mac files with the following known limitations : some bitmap with less than 16 colors are not retrieved ( this will be corrected later in LibreOffice 4.2), LibreOffice 4.1 can not retrieve some bitmaps which have a odd number of pixel in each row (this must be corrected in LibreOffice 4.2).
    • concerning database, presentation, spreadsheet files, none must be converted, ie. the basic filter which tries to retrieve the "valid" caracters must be called.

      osnola

° but the size of the bitmap is not retrieved, so the bitmap is recreated with a small size and you will need to enlarge it by hand

    Hello again Peter,

concerning mwawCSVOSX°, I have only a small set of pure database and spreadsheet files ( maybe 1 or 2 for each different Mac versions of ClarisWorks/AppleWorks ), so it may be able to retrieve the basic content of a spreadsheet files and a database file ( ie. the number + the text which appears in the cells ) or not.

    osnola.

° This is a crude AppleScript program which calls a binary to create a CSV file...

For you information, Peter, I have supplied fosnola with database and spread sheet files from CW2, CW4 and AW. My files are not that complicated but I think all of them will be open with LO 4.2.

N.B. Pict files are very small. Probably due to having few pixels as they where ceated on a Performa 475.

    Hello Fruhulda,

programming is a little more complex than that, ie. the hard features LibreOffice 4.2 where freezed at the beginning of november ( see https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/4.2 ) and now LibreOffice 4.2 is mainly in the phase of bug corrections...

Currently the parent's library of libmwaw: librevenge is rewritten and allows now to export spreadsheet, I am trying to add some spreedsheet filters (for some easier format) in libmwaw: for BeagleWorks/WordPerfect suite, Microsoft Works, ... ( so these filters will probably appear in LibreOffice 4.3 ).

After I will need to create the classes needed to export true pictures (ie. no longer create a text document with some embedded graphics), then I will be able to rewrite differently the AppleWorks/ClarisWorks filters to convert more kind of documents.

So if all go smooth, it may appear in LibreOffice 4.3, if not (the most probable), in LibreOffice 4.4.

Thank you for all the work you are doing fosnola!

Apple should have done this but typically loses interest quickly as it moves onto other projects.

For Appleworks files that cannot be opened by other programs directly, such as database files:

Consider installing Snow Leopard Server into Parallels and run Appleworks directly:

    Michael

For the less technically minded here, please detail, step by step, the process of setting up Snow Leopard in Parellels, VMWAre Fusion or VirtualBox [free].

Also note if there any problems to look out for.

Peter:  See post #1 in this thread:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439

However, the better approach is to install Snow Leopard Server, which is discussed in Post #1 and its step by step instructions are here:
