Q: Massive problem with audio interface

Hi there.

I recently bought a brandnew iMac 27" Haswell i7. I encountered problems with my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 audio interface. These are buzzing, clicking and noise immediately or after 3 minutes or so. I tried everything, re-installed the driveres several times, nothing, really nothing worked.

Then I bought an RME Babyface audio interface - and guess what? It's the same problem. I also have a massive sound noise after some minutes or the recording channel in Garage Band drops completely.

What is wrong here? I already tried using a different power plug, tried all USB ports, turned off WiFi, HDD sleep mode, etc. Nothing worked.

Do you have an idea?

I appeciate your help,

Adrian.

I tried 10.9.2 as Anthony suggested. Although 90% of the problems gone still a lot of drop offs while recording exists with my Apogee Jam 96k which means my system (imac 3TB fusion) is still useless

Let's not forget that this is beta 1 of 10.9.2, so there is still a possibility that more of these issues could be resolved by the time it's released to the public. Here's to hoping!

Just to chime in here I had the exact same issue with a new iMac and a 1TB fusion drive, Mavericks and a Scarlett 2i2 USB interface. Since moving to the 10.9.2 beta the issue has gone!

So just to reassure folks 10.9.2 should fix it - at least on this interface. One little note, initially after moving to 10.9.2 the issue remained, but if you're using a Scarlett interface you need to use the class compliant drivers. Once I switch to those all was good.

    Hope this reassures/helps!

Sounds like the new OS version solves most problems.  I'm tempted to download the beta, but would rather wait for the official release.  It would just be nice if Apple could give us an idea when that might be released.

    Thanks Anthony81!

    The 10.9.2 beta is working!!!

My Motu Track 16 interface is finally working with my iMac i7, 3TB FD bought in end of October!

Sad that Apple doesn't come back to us and tell it's their fault, and that they are working on a solution. This shows that Apple have tons of work to do regarding their customer support. Feedback is important, but from Apple it's non existing!

Now we just wait for the final release of 10.9.2

Now I will play my music LOUD! - Feeling happy!

Yea not a problem brother . Like I said I feel bad for all of us . It's not cool . Also people if your interfaces manufacturer hasn't updated the drivers to work for mavericks your gonna have issues no matter what. Everyone needs to check for mavericks driver updates for their devices before they say something doesn't work. Even if the driver ran fine with mountain lion it still needs to be updated for mavericks specifically .

My Propellerhead Balance audio interface doesn't have any drivers supplied, it relies on CoreAudio to drive it. So I'm afraid I'll have to depend on Apple to get this right

Ah I see . A lot of the issues were with apples core too . Have you tried the beta I posted ? I think it fixed the core issue . I would time machine your current setup and update using the beta . Doesn't erase anything just updates the OS . If it doesn't work just restore back to the setup

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, 10.9.2 does fix the FD issue and the public release will do the same, can't give you a release time for that, but I believe it will be sooner than later.

Hmmm, to be honest I'm a little nervous of installing a "beta" of anything, I know, I'm a developer (not Mac) myself!

I'll have to think about it, at least I have Time Machine up and running for when the time comes...

Update on my MBPr with Behringer UMC204:

Installed 10.9.2 beta as per Anthony's suggestion.

    No change.

    Reinstalled OS via recovery drive.

    Suddenly, interface worked with Garageband.

Attempted to play a song from iTunes.

Song wouldn't play (time counter wouldn't move, as if music was paused)

Switched to built in speakers via system preferences.

    Song suddenly played.

    Unplugged and replugged interface.

Same crackle noise and drop as before.

    Went back to Garageband.

Interface failure and dropped after a few seconds.

Wondering why it worked at all.

I've also contacted interface manufacturer to inform them of this widespread issue.

@Anthony: Where's that Youtube vid you mentioned?

im sorry to hear that dude. i can only give suggestions. did you download the latest drivers for your device for mavericks ? if so try disconnecting the device, uninstalling any previous drivers, reinstall updated drivers then plug device back in. alot of times the old drivers can interfear . i had to do this myself. but i cant stress how important it is to have fresh updated drivers for mavericks. it will not run correct if at all without them no matter what. and the messed up part is alot of these companies are slacking on updating for whatever reason. some are going to try to make money off of this situation and say that its not possible and only their NEW interfaces are compatible which is b*llsh*t . Also if anybody is using Logic pro X the newest update is 10.0.6 which was just released and they fixed alot of issues also. 10.0.5 was garbage and had interface problems out the @ss.

As for the video it was done before i figured out that splitting the fusion worked for me and also the new beta fixed my problems too. it was more of an awareness video to help spread the word and to push people to complain to apple as much as they can so that they would get it fixed sooner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV0LqdL1h6g

i would try as many things as your patience can handle without throwing your machine into the wall. when downloading driver updates from the manufacturer site alot of the downloads will come with an uninstall file also. i used that to clean all the older info out and reinstalled a fresh driver like i said earlier and that helped me alot.

    I have an 27" late 2012, i7, 4x3.4Ghz  ivybridge, 3TB FD, 24 of RAM and a Scarlett 2i2.

Installed Maverick first then Scarlett driver (not class compliant). I only use the Scarlett to play audio through Mplayer X and Firefox (Youtube and the like). No recording. Playback produced severe gapping and distortion at first. An old win XP pentium would have done better. Tried to play with sample rates, core audio, nothing worked. I finally gave up to try since F-Rite promised to fix this (meantime use class driver blahhblah.......but I did not).

Did the Update to 10.9.1. Though I can not exactly remember the date, since some weeks, the problems are just......GONE!. Playback is fine. But why? If I update once 10.9.2 is available - will the problems come again?

Besides: During researching the USB-Interface-Issue, I found out that you obviously need to buy extra software to avoid resampling during playback or you must change the s-rate manually in Audio Midi Setup to match each media files rate. Although I must admit I cannot hear the difference if audio is resampled (my ears are not best in class) - this is a shame!

    Come on, Apple!
