If you get the Red X on your iPod, then follow the steps in the article below to resolve that issue.

Restore iPod from Disk Mode
- Disconnect iPod from your computer.
- Manually put iPod into Disk Mode.
- Open the latest version of iTunes and connect iPod.
- Restore iPod.

Thanks for the help. does it have to be fully charged? Or would a partial charge do? I have tried to do it but it it makes no difference and goes back to the cross.

As long as it has power it should get you to the troubleshooting steps. If not the next step would be to use another one of Apple's support resources.
