You may need to try this More than Once... Be sure to Follow ALL the Steps..

Then you have not entered Recovery Mode...
Try again... Take your time... Pay particular attention to Steps 3 and 4 in the above link
Some users have reported as many as 8 or 9 attempts were necessary before success

Is it asking for your unlock passcode or for the passcode for your Apple ID? If you have iOS 7 on the phone and you enabled Find my iPhone your phone is activation locked. You need to enter the Apple ID and passcode that was used to set up iCloud on the phone.

Jul 4, 2016 8:02 PM in response to jdoc67by nikipaige,Options that seem to have worked for others are old Apple ID passwords or removing symbols from passwords. However the quickest way that worked for me was leaving the phone connected to itunes and pressing and holding the power and home buttons simultaneously to restart the phone. The iPhone then synced with itunes normally.
