Q: Can't submit batch after 4.1 update...

After updating to 4.1, I receive the following error when submitting a batch:

Unable to submit to queue. Please restart your computer or verify your Compressor installation is correct.

I removed and re-installed Compressor several times, rebooted numerous times, and repaired permissions. No luck.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love some advice.

WOW, and the nail in the coffin for this project is that I've just brought the Compressor 4.1 created Video and Audio assets into DVD Studio Pro (v4) and laid them in the timeline and found that the timing is out for every clip!!!! At the beginning the sync is fine but as the track gets longer (eg. over an hour) the timing gets up to 1 or 2 seconds out!

I've seen this a looong time ago when I was working with old MiniDV tapes and I can't exactly remember what was needed to fix it but this has well and truly stuffed my deadline now (especially if I needed to re-encode all the assets again!

    <sigh>

Hi Marcspag, the issue of the failed batch submission is due to some "mild" corruption of SOME of the state information from the previous release of Compressor.app V4.1 (pre FCPX 10.1/Motion, compressor/ Mac Pro December 2013 announcement. It's likley (and unsubstanciated) that this error is the result of a programme check or parsing error from these legacy objects in the compressor.app prefs. The error/condition handler probably exits via this catch all message routine. A few people have had this issue.

Problem Fix: (as mentioned previously by Russ)

    1. quit compressor.app V4.1
    2. simply remove (delete | purge) the ~/library/Application Support/Compressor directory (see note below for Settings etc)
    3. restart compressor.app V4.1

As usual no need for any 3rd party "fixing software"....

    Background:

    • In the 2013 Compressor.app V4.1, the ~/library/Application Support/Compressor directory has some small changes in the since V4.0 and no apparent hidden objects either). It's merely my assumption that some legacy objects were causing the failure during the SUBMIT (batch submission) action transaction.
    • I could NOT find any diagnostic or errors messages so far anywhere nor in the usual hard to find places. This is quite strange because compressor/Qmaster in V4.0 were quite verbose. This is absurd because such a programme error should be logged somewhere /var/logs , ~/library/logs etc
    • the Compressor.app V4.1 flavour does not utilise Apple Qmaster's ~/library/Application Support/Apple Qmaster directory , despite the use of a "cluster" component one case use through the V4.1 UI. By all means delete it if you dont use it for Shake or Nuke etc rendering scripts.
    • Qmasterd and Qmasterca are still active in the Mavericks 1-.9.1 and Compressor.app V4.1 system (January 2014).
    • the many previous compressortranscoder substasks are not obvious. SEEMS A SINGLE "COMPRESSORTRANSCODER" or COMPRESSORD subtask performs/overseers the transcoding activity.. depsite the number of instances you specify on the Compressor.app V4.1 preferences. This might change.

Components/features have been removed or hidden Sadly these . Any clues would be helpful

    • applescripts/scipts at EOJ : nowhere to specify these ??
    • can't specify the SHARED STORAGE anymore: seems only use ~/library/Application Support/Compressor/Storage (was ~/library/Application Support/Apple Qmaster/Storage where you could SPECIFY | redirect another location for example on a SAN or high bandwidth shared arbitrated file system).. shame. Make sure you exclude this from TimeMachine as this can be VERY large and will bloat the size of your ~/Library.
    • Share Monitor.app - no w lives in /Applications/Compressor.app/Contents/PlugIns/Compressor/CompressorKit.bundle/C ontents/EmbeddedApps/ - drop in your dock for convenience. Frankly I don't think you will utilise it now, since the new UI is farbetter and more reliable.
    • can't File /OPEN or SAVE up exising compressor.scripts (see below for the NEW method)

Care needed before removing ~/library/Application Support/Compressor

    1. Compressor Settings: keep a copy of your ~/library/Application Support/Compressor/Settings/
    2. Compressor Templates: preserve these too!
    3. Move|Copy these back into the new | reinstated ~/library/Application Support/Compressor when you relaunch Compressor.app V4.1 from Step 3. above.

All is once again cool again! .. Resume your work.

Compressor V4.1 Update: Very Very cool!

    • simplfied UI - simple to add batch, set the CLUSTER or "this computer".. lovely!
    • is simple and easy to use..slightly "dumbed down"..
    • no need to bugger around with a surgeons knive and electron microscope and some voodoo to set up Qmaster. Qmater is hidden BTW, compressor.app V4.0 and Qmaster very stable compared to Compressor.app V3. r/Qmaster in legacy FCS. For the most, this is great , except for the few points mentioned above.
    • The new Network Encoding Monitor (Compressor Application menu/Window/Network Encoding Monitor or +E) to see what's running on other cluster nodes
    • Compressor/ Qmaster Logs now maintained in ~/library/Logs/Compressor which makes sense and are obvious in Console.app now.
    • Good batch job monitoring in the UI now (Active | comptetered tabs]. Dont need Share Monitor.app !
    • Motion projects (.motion) work fine.... stumbles at first to build PREVIEW then ok
    • use Compress.app menu/ Commands/ Import to add OPEN a compressor script (saved batch job such as job443_5d3_01_angle02.compressor) - its a pity its hidden.
    • finally a method to CUSTOMISE the keyboard shortcuts - nice
    • same to SAVE a compressor JOB (script) -
      1. select the batch JOB then
      2. use Compress.app menu/ Commands/ Export
      3. navigate the file system and save it
    • probably more goodness yet to find.

    Summary:

    • Its a shame you have had bad experiences wth Compressor.app.
    • Compressor.app V4.1 and its predecessors have been somewhat essential to our delivery process. Its our friend
    • Seems the Compressor.app V4,1 is a little sensitive to the hardware environment in terms of instances... hopefully the Mac Pro 2013 will yeild some frightening fast trancodes and rendering wi the AMD Firepro D700s....

    HTH....

Post your results for other to see.

    Hi Warwick,

Thanks for the suggestion and taking the time to put down all that detail but I've already tried that (as mentioned in a previous post) but still had the same problem. I even just tried it one more time... just to be 100% sure nothing had changed.

I so wish it was that easy, maybe for some people, but not for me.

    Cheers,

Hi Brett, no worries. This is strange. It may have been mentionedin this thead...

however, would you be in a position to try compressor.app V4.1 from ANOTHER user? Just to be sure that the issue is system wide.

if not, then theres a nasty in your ~/library somewhere. This can easily be found and whacked.

Else.. then theres a system wide issue: if so..

worth looking carefully through a the system logs.

Be happy to assist if you like.

    Hi Warwick,

Yep, I've tried creating a new user but the problem remained. In fact I also couldn't preview the videos without getting an error also.

I installed a new OS on an external HD and that worked quite nicely so I know I don't have a hardware issue.

I'm working with Apple Tech Support on it. I'll post my results (hopefully positive).

    Ta!

Hi Bret.. geez.. sounds like a nasty in the framework. I'd be interested what the Apple techs resolve for you.

Just wondered if you are ableto EXPORT a cip form teh native ye olde Quicktime player? Or Quicktme 7 Pro.

Wondering if apps like these have some issue with looking for a service tha tmay be corrupt.

Nothing in the logs eh? strange.

Please keep me posted with the status. I'm curious.

The common frameworks in OSx use a lot of stuff...

    cheers mate

I don't believe I have any probs with exporting from QT v7.

As I mentioned in another post, I'm able to create an encoded video file when using a Compressor Destination directly from in FCP X, but that then brought up my next problem which is the out-of-sync video & audio. Starts out great but progressively gets worse as the footage goes on (at 1 hr the difference is over 1 second).

I've seen that before when I used to edit from the old DV tapes and I did something to fix it but can't remember.

Anyway, I've asked Apple to help me with both problems.

I completely trashed both applications. Qmaster @ compressor 4.1. All preferences for Qmaster & compressor. Also trashed the Qmaster preference pane in system prefs.

So basically I trashed everything I could find withe regards to comp 4.1 & Qmaster. Then I used software update to install comp 4.1 again. Restarted & all good.

    Hope this helps.

This did it for me... FINALLY.....

Follow these additional steps if batches continue to get stuck (never complete) when submitting a batch to a shared computer list:

    1. From the top level of your startup disk, go to Users/Shared/Library/.
    2. In the Libary folder, select the Application Support folder, then choose File > Get Info.
    3. The Application Support Info window will open. In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, update the privilege settings as needed to give each item "Read & Write" privileges.
    4. Restart your computer.
