Q: can't restore my ipad

I have 7.0.4 on my iPad. It is backed up to my macBook Air. I want to restore the iPad as I've sold it and upgraded to a mini. When I connect to iTunes I can see that my software is up to date and next automatic check is due on 22/1/2014. Despite this when I select the restore option my iTunes says it wants to download a 7.0.4 update with the following message.

iOS 7.0.4

Bug fixes and improvements, including a fix for an issue that causes FaceTime calls to fail for some users.

For information on the security content of this update, please visit this website:

If I don't proceed the restore process simply cancels. If I do proceed, after a few minutes I receive an error message as follows:

"There is a problem downloading the software for the iPad. An unknown error occurred (-50).

Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."

My Macbook seems to be working fine in every respect as is my network. I've connected both wired and wirelessly and receive the same error.
