The only point I was expecting is that someone in apples technical support could tell me how to solve it.

As they haven't told anything at all and I could solve my problem I tried to share with other users.

    Maybe this could help then.

apple technical support is APPLECARE. the # to call applecare is 1-800-apl-care (1-800-275-2273)

if u want apple to help u with ur issue u need to actually contact them, not post in a community forum. this is where people go to talk to other apple users.

Correction: yours may have been a software-related problem, which was resolved by reinstalled the iOS.  A bad install of the iOS can cause odd issues, this being on of them.  In fact, you stating that REINSTALLING the iOS solved the problem proves that the software itself was not the problem. It was a bad install.  If it was actually the software, then reinstalling it would not have resolved the problem.

This is why restoring as new, which reinstalls the iOS to the device, is a recommended step if previous steps failed.

did not want to try out the long list of trial and error posted here. got it fixed by pod mod in 20 minutes and spared the whole damaged chip buy and do it yourself issue. i mean, if you are good in fixing this kind of stuff, sure go for it. but i do not have the time and knowledge, so it was easier to get it repaired. and, it did not cost 50, it cost 29. so everyone can decide for themselfs what is better. still think apple should repair it.

And here we see another brand new forum account, promoting this third-party service, which is not authorized by Apple, and voids all future service options from Apple.

I guess the only option is to get the **** wifi replaced by a third party repair shop... I don't think swapping out the wifi chip will be that difficult... I'm not saying podmod is genuine... I don't live in Europe so i wouldnt know. But I'm sure there are 3rd party repair centers all around if you know where to look. Was just checking out a few iFixit videos. Guess I'm gonna start looking for some 3rd party repait shops since Apple doesn't care for out of warranty iPhones damaged by THEIR software update.

Besides... I've got nothing to lose with this 650$ white brick I have in my hand... hmm... if it totally dies out... I'll probably use it as a good self-defense weapon... or maybe throw it at a few Apple reps while I record it with my new Nexus 5

Or, sell it to one of the many companies that purchase second-hand iPhones.

It's always amusing when someone talks about trashing their iPhone.  There are companies that will buy them.

And again, the software update didn't damage the iPhone.  It was already defective.  If the software update was the culprit, then all iOS 7+ devices would have this issue.  Neither my iPhone 4 or 5, running iOS 7, have this problem.  Same for millions of users.  So, it's not the software.  IT was your particular hardware.

You could be right but let me tell you that the wifi chips are not identical on all iPhone models. The chip part number is different in each generation. That is why iOS7 is having an issue with major 4S devices. There are videos on youtube showing users on a completely functional iOS 7.0.3 4S device... but as soon as it is updated to iOS 7.0.4, the wifi is greyed out!

The only logical conclusion is that 7.0.4 is buggy with the wifi chip model on the 4S. I know around 10-12 people at work with a 4S device... all of them... Yes.. all of them have this issue. It was working fine on 7.0.1/7.0.3 (didn't see anyone using 7.0.2). As soon as they updated to 7.0.4... BOOM! wifi greyed out.

Now this cannot be a coincidence... since all of them didn't purchase it from the same retail store or at the same time (The purchases of the 4S devices varied from 3 to 6 to 12 month gap). There were a few who were covered under warranty and got a refurb 4S and were instructed NOT to update to the latest firmware by the Apple "geniuses". Hmmm.... now I wonder why an Apple rep would say that?! The answer to that is obvious... incompatible hardware on the 4S gen.

I won't say it's a hardware issue. The wifi chip hasn't taken damage either. Some user on Youtube stated a good point, that the 7.0.4 firmware might have recorded the wifi chip's temperature wrong and forced it to shut down. This might get fixed with 7.1. But we'll just have to wait and see.

I haven't spotted a single 4S device on 7.0.4 with a working wifi (unless they have tied the heating method which works as a temporary fix but I wouldn't suggest doing that).

read today that apple repairs iphone screens in the US. how about the WLAN issue? i got mine fixed, pod*** did it, and iI do not think apple would do it for 29 euro. if interested, scroll the board, you will get the name. it is a hardware issue after all and it can be repaired. waited for the repair 20 minutes, wifi button working again. kind of wrong, not able to give credit to the ones that really fix stuff for a few bucks. but it is okay to encourage ppl to try out weird stuff that ruins their phone.

This guy is just Robert Mihelli spamming the boards again with his podmod, modpod, modpoop or whatever it is called today. Another new member joins today and only has this one comment/review to give? It's a scam folks. Go online and read the reviews yourself, but you may have to use a browser translator because they are a German company. You know it's them because he always says 29 euro and always calls it a WLAN issue. The company is so sad and pathetic that it needs to review itself and spam boards all over the place. Read the reviews and you will know. No one leaves a detailed review with how long they have been in business and where their locations are...no normal person reviews like that! So do your homework, read up on how bad they are and ignore his posts. Just Google "podmod yelp" and see the 1 of 5 star rating. Look at these reviews...all from the same person using different names.....who reviews a company like this? The company itself! use a browser translator to read them, but they are funny (note that they all say 29 euro and other stuff a regular customer would never know) http://www.trustpilot.com/review/podmod.de

More complaints about them http://www.handy-faq.de/forum/iphone_forum/90191-erfahrung_podmod_de_modpod_de.h tml

can't a mod ban his IP or something?

If you update you have 90 days of coverage from the day the update is released that Apple covers any hardware issues caused by te update so if you do the update and wifi grey out because of the update back your phone up and restore it set it up as a new device and if wifi is still greeted out call apple and they will usually get a relacement set up if your phone is outside of its 1 yr warrenty then try May have to get a supervisor override but they do cover it. Also if you ever get your phone repaired by a third party service then you void any hardware warrenty you have. So yes even of you crack your screen and just get the glass replaced then 3mos later your power button stops working your phone no longer has warrenty to cover that so always weigh your options before going to third party
