Q: Wi-fi constantly searching

Although I am securely connected to the Internet on my home network, the grayed-out "Wi-Fi" on the menu bar constantly says "Looking for Networks". What's that all about?

The same thing is happening to my new Macbook Air. I tried to get tech support on an issue with a music recording program called protools. The tech was unable to take control of my computer to help me because the wi fi keeps going on and off. I tried resetting my xfinity modem but it did not help. I also have this problem at school but I thought it was the filtering software.
