I have an iPhone 4.  Upgraded to iOS 6, phone got slow...upgraded to iOS 7, phone got even slower.  I've tried all suggestions to help increase performance but still very slow.  I suspect Apple, with upgrades, is attempting to get us to buy iPhone 5's.  The decreased performance has turned me off on Apple products.  I'll be shopping for a new phone, Android sounds good . (Just typing this on my phone was aggravating, letters on keyboard lagged!)

Apple isn't different than any other OEM of smartphones when it comes to OS upgrades slowing down older phones. In fact they are better than some because they are supporting the iPhone 4 which is now 2-3 years old, which is a long time in the smartphone industry. No matter what manufacturer you choose, a 2-3 year old phone with 2-3 major OS upgrades will be slower. And many phone suppliers (Android or whoever) don't support their older products as well as Apple does. You may be able to improve your phone's performance by cutting back on the number of apps you have. If you have less than 10% free memory, you should get rid of some. Also, if you're carrying a lot of video or music on the phone, off-load it to free up memory. Also, cut back on the number of things you sync to iCloud, and cut back on the number of notifications you get. The more interruptions you get rid of,the better your phone will perform (on average). Also, hard reboot your phone every 30 days or so (home button plus power button until you see the Apple logo). Remember that the Android world is a different one, and not necessarily one you'll like after using Apple products. I won't go into details here, but there's one thing Apple does better than anyone, and that's the total integrated hardware-software end to end user experience.

I followed the steps of the article on the following link and my iPhone 4 is performing much better with iOS 7.

    IT WILL SLOW DOWN

If your happy with the iphone 4, then don't upgrade

I just had top buy a new phone because my Iphone 4 become way too slow after the upgrade

Sad really - cause i really loved the little sucker on the IOS6

Also if you have a large collection of music videos, they will be in order of song after the upgrade on the video app, currently they are by artist.

Is there a setting for that?

When I do that, i get "more" and "archive."  Is there a way to change that?

Same thinking and experience- insufficient Apple response.  I might try the 6 if it's out before May; if not , time to look at the Lumia, Note 3 and I believe Microsoft may come out with a game changer shortly. I have strong reason to believe MS is going to do this in the next  30 days.

I am still having occaisonal odd behavior and app crashes, etc. But it is almost liveable now.

The thing I did which improved the situation the most was disablel background updates

(and I had disabled auto-update long ago).

So now apps are not automatically trying to get most recent data in the background. I guess that means they must refresh when I open them. It seems to have made no difference in any app behavior. But general performance seems to be back almost to where it was with iOS6 and I'm not constantly losing my contacts and finding Find-my-iPhone disabled, etc.

It was "Turn Off Background App Refresh" found at http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/?utm_source=feedburner&utm which someone posted earlier in this thread.

My experience is that the iPhone 4 is very slow on iOS7, there is a time lag between touching a letter key and the letter appearing. In particular on Evernote for iOS7, but that is the app I use the most. It has improved with a recent update to the app.
