would assume that if you can save as or convert publisher files so they work on word in windows they
will work on ms word on macs

Those forums are just as helpful as there, and well-staffed with Office-using Mac experts.
Basically, Publisher is a terrible format for cross-platform use. I can't even get Win Word to open them! If you developed the document in Publisher, try the Save As... command in Publisher to find a different format for saving. If someone sent you a Publishder file and you do not have Windows, there are web sites that will convert Pub files to other formats.
Two negatives to that:
1) Generally, Word for Mac is not an output option. About the best you can do is a pdf.
2) Formatting is usually destroyed. You get the text and images but in a very ugly layout.
