OSX issue with an old iMac

Hi,

I have a 2004 G4 flat panel iMac and it came with OSX Jaguar. Then I upgraded it to OSX Panther. After a day of Panther, it did not boot up. I think a system file was moved. Then I got the instal disk for Tiger. That didn't work. It just stayed on the Apple logo and the loading sign forever. So then I got it to boot into OS9, which works, but most programs do not work with it. After about a month, my Mac did't boot up into OS9 even. And my iMac never had an AirPortExpress Card installed. What do I do?

    That font is very hard to read.

     

    If things keep going wrong like that I wonder if your hard drive is going, or at least has major directory corruption.  Did you ever run Disk Utility on it?

     

    On the Tiger install, were you using a black, retail version of Tiger which installs on any computer supporting Tiger, or was it a gray disc that came with another Mac and will only work with that one?

     

    How much RAM in this Mac?  Something that came with Jaguar may not have the RAM for Tiger.

    What computer did you use to post your message? Please do not use Impact font here again - it is unreadable.

     

    I have had hangs with Tiger installs before. Often, but not always, you can power down and it is OK when you restart.

     

    Do you have important data on the G4 which is not backed up elsewhere?

     

    If not try the a clean install but be aware that all settings and data will be lost:

     

    1. After the DVD or CD loads select your language and click the Continue button.
    2. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    3. In Disk Utility select your hard drive and erase it.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    5. After the process has completed quit Disk Utility and return to the installer.
    6. Now complete the install.

    Hello,

     

    Some Macs needed a Firmware update to go beyond Panther.

     

    If you don't know the model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...
