How can I get rid of the phone asking for the 4 digit code at opening?

go to the same settings screen where you activated passcode lock and turn it off.

Settings>General>Passcode (or Touch ID and Passcode). Enter the passcode, then tap Turn Passcode Off.

See my post above.  You were probably asked to create one when you updated from iOS 6 to iOS 7.

    Use the Settings app.

Settings > General > Passcode Lock > enter Your Passcode > Turn Passcode Off

Your welcome. Keep in mind though that turning off the passcode does reduce the security of your iPad. You might try setting it to a longer time interval first.
