Sounds like the same problem we've all been having, it seems to happen randomly, not sure it has anything to do with that you were doing exactly. In any case, check Apple's Support page or give them a call, they might have some insight on this. Or just join the disgruntled Shuffle owners club.

    Good luck!

I bought an IPOD Shuffle yesterday, transferred some songs to it and today I got these problems:
    1. Whenever I try to press any button I see Green and Orange flashing lights.
    2. ITunes is not able to detect my IPod, although windows is able to detect it.
    3. When I try to reset it using IPod Updater, it gave me a problem saying that "Can't mount Ipod"

Have you tried formatting it through Windows and then using the iPod updater to Restore it? Try that, if it doesn't work, call Apple Support, they might be of help.

After searching high and low, I found a solution in another chat area. It takes a few minutes, but it works.

Place the Shuffle in your PCs USB.

A dialog box may pop up. Do not click it.

Do not click any dialog which pops up asking if you want to put songs from this pc onto this ipod, deleting the old ones.

Click edit, preferences, then select the "ipod" tab.

Check the box "enable disk use".

Move the slider to the right so that it is set to more data (maximum), and 0 songs.

    Click ok.

Right click your start button and select "Explore".

Navitage to My Computer, and then seek the drive which represents the shuffle.

Right click the drive and select format.

Leave the options as they are.

    Click Start.

After formatting, click eject ipod (icon in the bottom right of the itunes window).

    Remove the shuffle.

    Re-insert the shuffle.

Just had this happen to me this morning with my 1GB Shuffle, and I'm completely baffled as to how it happened. I listen to my iPod every morning during the commute to work and haven't had any problems for 4 months now. I always update software as it comes out and that never caused problems either.

This morning it was working just fine, I was using it for about an hour then turned it off. Then I turned it back on later, and the lights started flashing and nothing worked. I didn't do anything to it between uses, not even charging it, so how it could go from working to not instantly is beyond me.

I'll work on it tonight and see if I can fix it, in case anyone else has seen this particular case.

    ATTN EVERYONE...

Restore your iPod according to these instructions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300701

And to resolve the issue that you are having (status light indicating an error message), you should probably go through those instructions several times (think, like, half a dozen) and then try to update your iPod with the iTunes program.

    Best wishes,
    CG

PS- If that doesn't work, and your iPod is still under warranty, you can set up for a replacement here:

Same issue here. I've tried CasperGemini's tip without succes. After at leat 20 tries I'm giving up. I'll call my nearest Apple reseller tomorrow.

What really irritates me is that my warranty ran out just 3 days ago! I hope Apple will be cool about that.

Better luck to the rest of you.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! THIS WORKED, I'm so happy to say this advice worked.
Some of the steps were not explained fully (obvious steps that do not need to be explained) but I was able to fix my problem!! Now the computer recognizes the shuffle when it is inserted into the USB! Formatting the drive led to other steps which enabled me to set everything up!
    Thanks again!

This may work fine in some situations but for most of us the shuffle is not recognized in itunes so when we click on the ipod tab it just says "no ipod connected".

If you only knew how many times the ppl in this thread has tried to restore their shuffles without success. Its hard to restore the shuffle when you keep getting a "Firmware Failure/Disk Error" or "Can't Mount iPod" and yes we have already looked at those pages too. Like many ppl on this thread, my shuffle is out of warranty so we have tried everything to no avail.

Here's another horror story... Got my 1GB Shuffle around 20 February 2006. Worked flawlessly until I was coming back from a Memorial Day vacation, and it went GREEN-ORANGE-GREEN-ORANGE on me.

No big deal, I thought. I was able to restore using the updater, so everything was cool.

Then, a day or two later, it happened again.

I restored it again. I thought, "Maybe it's because I'm jamming the thing too full." I replaced my song list with about 360MB of music, leaving plenty of space.

And today it went GREEN-ORANGE-GREEN-ORANGE on me again.

I was very surprised to find to helful suggestions on Apple's support pages, nor even any descriptions of problems resembling this. I understand technology crashes, even Apple's technology -- but a simple device like a shuffle shouldn't need to be restored to factory settings once every couple of days

Any ideas yet to be mentioned?
