Q: Mac Mini automatically Raid/Fusioned my Drives ...

Alright well here's the story;

 

I wanted to bootcamp windows 8.1 on my L2012 Mac Mini Server edition. I've got 1 250gb Samsung Evo drive and 1 Tb that came with the mini. I made a partition and went to boot into bootcamp installer and windows stated "windows cannot install to this partition due to an error"

 

Restart into recovery mode, click disk utility; both drives RED colored, i click the top drive ( evo samsung) click verify disk and BLAM! Says 1.25Tb on "internal drive" 1 partition "macintosh HD" which is 1tb. THATS ALL.

 

Any suggestions? I'm stumped and have a brick for a mac mini currently....

    I've narrowed it down to it makign it a "logical volume group"

     

    Once i delete the volume group via diskutil btoh drives are RED and i cannot click anything once i do it says "fix" and automatically makes a group again ..

     

    WHAT IS GOING ON

    In Lion, if you install the OS wihen both an SSD and rotating disk is installed a Fusion drive will be created. To have seperate drives, see the about midway in the following discussion.

    What OS X are your running? If it's Mavericks, then while in the Mavericks Recovery HD you should be able to click the IGNORE button and the drives will change to black so you can work with them individually.

     

    If you're running Mountain Lion, there's a bug with the ML Recovery HD Disk Utility where the IGNORE button does nothing but take you back to the square one. In that case, you have to use Terminal (within the Recovery HD) to erase your drives individually; then you can reinstall OS X ML onto your SSD and keep your HDD separate.

     

    I'm not knowledgable about BootCamp, but I do know with a Fusion drive, you can add a partition which will be outside of the logical volume group (Fusion drive) so you can install BootCamp.
