Q: Do I have to pay for Numbers upgrade on OS 10.9.1 again? I didn't on my iPad2. Now incompatible.

I purchased Numbers 2.3 for my iMac, then upgraded to Maverick. No upgrades available for Numbers on OS 10.9.1. Only new purchase of App I already paid for.  Now, my iPad (IOS 7.0.4) has upgraded Numbers to 2.0.1 with no charge and is incompatible with my iMac. Do I have to pay another $19.99 for Numbers to have them compatible?

There are several reasons why the updates don't show as free for those who already have iWork '09 installed. I don't think #1 applies to you.

    1. You must have iWork '09 apps installed & they must be updated to the x.3 version. You can also download the standalone updater from this page.

    2. If you are not using English as the primary language for your Mac, change to English & run Software Update. You can then switch back to your preferred language.

    3. Go to Mac App Store (MAS) > Click on Store > Check for Unfinished Downloads. You will need to individually click into each application > Click update > enter in your Apple ID & password and then it will start updating.

    4. Open App Store on your Mac & look at the buttons under Keynote, Pages & Numbers. If it does not say “Update” click Account under Quick Links, enter your password & click “View Account.”  Next, click the “Reset” button to the right of “Reset all warnings for buying and downloading” at the bottom of this page, & click Done. Check your updates tab & iWork & iLife updates should now appear.

These are the ones I've seen work for others.

    Peggy,

Thanks for your response.  I went through each of your suggestions and my '09 Numbers App claims that it is up to date at 2.3 version.

    Any other suggestions? Anyone else?

First & foremost that I should have mentioned is that you need to be running Mavericks, OS X 10.9, to get the newest versions of the iWork apps. Numbers 2.3 is the latest version of Numbers that runs on Lion or Mountain Lion. It also runs on Mavericks.

Even though I use Mavericks & have downloaded the new iWork apps, I will continue to use the iWork '09 apps to actually do any work. The new versions are severely lacking in features.

Peggy, I too am running Maverick OS X 10.9.1 What is it that you don't like about the new versions of iWork '09 in Numbers & Pages?

I just figured out my problem.  I don't know why the warning said I did not have the upgrade to Numbers 3.0.1 because when I look into my Finder, that is what is there.

The only thing I can guess why the Numbers App when opened says it is 2.3 is that I had opened a file created in 2.3.  But why in the heavens couldn't my computer find or figure out I actually do have 3.0.1 downloaded?  Crazy.  Anyway, I think I will keep duplicates of my files in Numbers in both 2.3 and 3.0 for a while until I am sure I won't lose any info because of othe transition.

Thanks for the help.  I haven't used Numbers enough to see any problems with the newer version, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new version of Pages.  It allows tracking of changes on my iPad that transfer to my iMac. l can also do notes on each document that transfer.

Now I just wish they would create a version (even if it can't do everything) of SCRIVENER that I can access on the iPad.  I'm really into the app with my writing and I don't have an iBook yet.  So the only way I can work on my writing is on my iMac desktop.  I can't put my feet up like in my recliner when I'm working on Pages.  Oh well.

Anyway, thanks for the help and the conversation.

    Hi LeafRiverWriter,

What is it that you don't like about the new versions of iWork '09 in Numbers & Pages?

I can't speak for Pages, which I don't yet use, but Numbers 3.0 has dropped many features present in Numbers 2.3 but has added a few others, streamlined the interface, and finally made sync with iOS devices work well. The changes can be a net plus or a net minus, depending on how you use Numbers.

If you depend on producing traditional, highly formatted printed, static output, you will find Numbers 3.0 too limited.  If you value collaboration, or simply taking your Numbers documents with you to edit or do data entry in the cloud or on your iOS device with your changes synced back automatically to your Mac, then you will much prefer Numbers 3.0.

You can read more about the differences in the gained, lost, and workarounds threads.

Scrivener is the best!  I think I read that it will be coming to iOS at some point. As iPads get more powerful, things like that are becoming possible.

I love the iWork '09 versions of Pages & Numbers. The new 2013 versions are missing so many features that previous versions have. I do have a couple of files that I sync between my Macs & my iPhone or iPads, but I don't do serious work on the iOS devices.

I don't do serious work on the iOS devices.

I sometimes wonder about the various connotations of "serious." At one time there were many who scoffed at the idea of doing "serious" work on a PC as opposed to a mainframe. Some iOS devices already have as much power as all but the highest end PCs of not so many years ago. iOS devices already are good at displaying results in a dynamic way. They also provide a convenient platform for many types of data entry. Data entry is, I think, "serious" work.

The idea is to have various devices working together. Then you've got some serious new productivity-enhancing power that you didn't have before. The new iWork can (finally) provide that. The old iWork has some attractive features but, alas, can't provide that new power.

I've written two book using the combination of my iMac & iPad in Pages App, the first about 110,000 words (400p) and the second about 60,000 words (250 pages). The new upgrades to IOS and Pages are making it easier to move between them.

I must say though, the changes in Pages on my iMac are going to take some getting used to.  All the formating has moved or changed or something.  I sure hope I like it more because, like most people, I don't have the time to be relearning Apps every year.  There are so many I haven't tried for the first time.  However, since I use it so much, I will figure out the changes in Pages formating.

BTW, what happened to the footer? The spot that told me the number of pages and took me to any page number I typed in?  I'll miss that if it is gone.  I'm not too fond of the floating word count either.  On my iPad, it sometimes ends up floating in the middle of the page and I have to turn it off and back on again to get it to correct.

    Hi Deborah,

That's impressive you've been able to make productive use of the iPad for such long works.

Perhaps someone here knows the answers to your questions about the page number and footer. Or you could try the Pages area.

Some features scheduled to be added to Pages and Numbers in the next few months are listed in this support document.
