Q: Kernel Task is using CPU and slowing down MacBook massivly

Hey,

updated to Mavericks but sadly my MacBook is running very slow now. I checked the Activity Monitor and my CPU is fully or sometimes almost fully used the kernel_task process...

Now I looked around and found that many have the problem but not many have a fix to it!

What can I do to get my MacBook to at least normal speed (its way slower then before and I was told Mavericks will make the Computer faster and more Battery Efficient).

Please let me know how I can constantly fix it...

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Thanks Arthur  for the Details you provided.

I have went with the nuclear optio: repaired and erased the Machintosh HD and carried out a clean installtion of Mavericks. And still the problem persists; I tried to restart using Safe Mode; even in Safe Mode Kernel_Task is still consuming over 300% of CPU. The fan is running non stop but the Mac Air Temp us around 30C whcih is accpetable (The laptop itself is overhearting although the fan is running non stop).

    Kindly advise. Thx Arthur.

Could you download and run Etrecheck:  Etresoft: EtreCheck is a small, free app developed by one of the contributors to this forum which will generate a system report on your computer (no personal info). If you can use it to generate a system report and paste it in a response here, we can take a look and see what might be the problem.

    1. I think you and I may have different definitions of "clean install". A clean install means that you erase the HD completely and then reinstall mavericks from scratch, and then reinstall your applications from scratch. And if you just reinstall old/bad/incompatible software, you are just going to reinstall your problems.
    2. I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of every item on your report, you're going to have to research some things yourself. But:
      1. I see a lot of junk that is unnecessary.
      2. In particular, these items are very suspicious:
        1. PPP monitor: sounds unnecessary

        2. the failed launch daemons

        3. google keystone daemon: lots of posts in the forums about it.

        4. intego

        5. rogue amoeba: I don’t think rogue amoeba is up to date yet with Mavericks.

        6. two magic menus can’t be good. One probably isn’t good.

        7. SIMBL and Perian

You could try to uninstall this stuff and see if it helps. But, your OS is very heavily modified. If I were you, I'd cut to the chase and do a (real) clean install:

    1. download mavericks again
    2. backup your documents. Not your apps or system files.
    3. make a USB Mavericks installer with DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker)
    4. boot from the USB installer, completely erase your HD, reinstall mavericks.
    5. reinstall from known good installers, not from backups, not from migration
    6. don't reinstall
      1. crapware (anything that purports to "optimize",  "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac.)
      2. haxies (stuff that just modifies the GUI)
      3. antivirus software

Now, this is just my philosophy of mac computing. I also have a MBP 8,2; it is extremely fast. I use it mostly for audio recording and editing with Logic. I have learned (mostly the hard way) to avoid the junk that I listed above. But people get very attached to their crapware and their haxies.

Apart from your RAM being barely enough, a simple thing which may help is to reset PRAM (at least it worked OK for me when I had the same issue) :

Immediately after hitting the ON button, hold +ALT+P+R, until you hear the gong a second time (usually louder, with usually a brighter screen).

    Hi Arthur,

I'm hoping you would be so kind as to further share some of your wisdom! I too am experiencing this Kernel Task issue (ridiculously high CPU) and am not having any success rectifying the issue. I've done disk repair and repaired permissions, memory clean, some of the basics.....I've been pouring through the community discussion (which is taking an exceedingly long period of time with the computer continuously lagging), and have run etrecheck based on seeing this. Hi Corissa,

    Here's what I'd do:

    1. make sure you have a good backup first.
    2. Your report is pretty clean. (You do have a lot of internet plugins, though, so if your slow performance is mostly while browsing, I'd get rid of those first.) Nothing that looks particularly suspicious to me in terms of misbehaving third party software. But I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of all your startup items, daemons, and agents, so you'll have to do some research yourself.
    3. I'd try a safe boot: restart and hold down the shift key until you see the apple logo. A safe boot does some diagnostic checking and then starts up without third-party added on software. If the symptoms are gone, then the problem is some third party item that you have installed. OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? . Then you need to figure out what the third-party item is that is causing the problem and uninstall it.
    4. Try a test user account: Isolating an issue by using another user account
    5. If your Mac's symptoms are still there after a safe boot, then the problem is probably with OSX itself. If that's the case, I would:
      1. Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery . Then restart and see how your mac behaves.
      2. If that doesn't work, I'd try TechTool Techtool Pro 7 , which can occasionally fix a problem that Disk Utility can't.
      3. If that doesn't work, I'd reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.
      4. If that doesn't work, I'd do a clean reinstall.
    6. If you need more guidance for any of these options, let me know.
    7. I suppose there's a chance that your hard drive is failing, so if nothing else works, then I'd swap out the drive. But it sounds more like a software issue to me.

    Hi Arthur,

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I've done a recovery boot but have not done a safe boot, will do that now. I've been having issues with an extremely slowed start up time when starting/restarting the computer. I've noticed that there are 3 items in my Users & Group preferences that I con't know why they are their, but the system won't let me remove them, says their Users & Groups preferences are locked. I'll go into the safe boot right now and try things from their. Thank you so much for your time and suggestions, I appreciate it. Let's see how this goes.....

    Hello all,

I don't understand any of this as I'm barely technically inclined, but here's my etrecheck.
