Q: "MSVCR80.dll Missing"

iTunes no longer starts on my PC the message is: this program cannot start  "MSVCR80.dll Missing".   This program has operated well for months and I have made no alterations other than attempting to install the latest update, what should I do?

Windows 7

I would not claim that the reboot was necessary because I don't know. I just thought I may as well do that since I had a failed installation and then uninstalled all Apple software and a reboot takes 15 seconds for me. I didn't have to stop any services manually.

Off topic: I don't understand why the latest iTunes installer is about 50 megabytes larger than the previous version's.

On my system Apple Mobile Sevice wouldn't start which is why iTunes wouldn't install. When you run the installer it stops all Apple services..you can watch it do this. Copies the new files then tries to start the services again which is where it failed. Going in and manually trying to start the service was no dice either. Rebooted the computer with it set to Automatic and you'd think it would start the service but that caused a whole lot of other problems with iTuneshelper and a bunch of others. There's some fatal error going on with the installer and it's tied to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is my wild uneducated guess. Could be completely wrong but the DLL file is tied to that.

For some reason if you're an "Administrator" on your computer you're still not an Administrator sometimes. Why Windows does this I have no idea. In doing some light research the profile could've become corrupted. When I try to access certain folders says I don't have permission. I click continue and I have access. Sometimes when you install programs and it tries to write to files in protected folders it can't which will cause the program to not install properly. IF you have the option to Run as Administrator use it....if not...have nothing to worry about. I could fix the issue but I don't really care..lol

All you are uninstalling is programs not content. I too have imported music, movies, etc etc from all different sources and everything was still there after I uninstalled every piece of Apple software. It's like when you uninstall a program then reinstall and it still has all your settings.

From now on whenever iTunes says there's an update available I'm going to uninstall iTunes, download a full copy and install it that way. Tired of wasting time dealing with these stupid issues.

You're a star - this worked for me. From a very happy Aberdonian who has been stressed out over this all evening. I can now sleep easy. Thanks.

Another user recommended System Restore on your PC, and this worked for me!  That should hold it until Apple fixes this same issue that they had in 2011.

I did this and worked fine for me too (Windows Vista). Seemed much easier approach than a manual uninstall/reinstall of all the Apple software.

    otacon72  please advise

    I went to Add/Remove

    and was able to Remove

    iTunes

    Apple Application Support

    Apple Software Update

However I was able to remove everything except "Apple Mobile Device Support".

This is what happens when I click on Remove: it starts to uninstall and then it ROLLS BACK (rolling back action) then quits with box appearing:  FATAL ERROR DURING INSTALLATION.  I also tried clicking on the Change button and tried to remove from there same thing happens  I can see the files being deleted; then I get a box saying Apple Mobile Device Support was never installed and then the final box with same message as before FATAL ERROR etc...

Is there another way to remove Apple Mobile Device Support or should I try reinstalling iTunes without removing it?  Thanks.

Try pressing on regardless with the rest of the steps. Others have had success.

Why not simply go back to earlier Windows Restore Point (from before you upgraded iTunes)?

You're welcome to take that approach, but I was more interested in getting past the problem. The new build failed to install properly on my XP box, but did so smoothly on a Win 7 system. I need both systems on the same build because I move the library between them. I've no idea what factors might be at play in the failure but at least it can be resolved and doesn't damage the library.
