Q: iCloud problem with Mail.app

When i turn off "Documents & Data" in System Preferences -> iCloud then everything is fine in Mail.app.

When i turn it on, then every change / edit in Signature settings or Smart Mailboxes in Mail.app  is lost after restarting Mail.app. This is a problem only with my one user account in OS X. A test account is without problems. I see these message in log files when starting Mail.app:

When i have "Documents & Data" checked in System Preferences for iCloud then no .mailsignature files are created or written in ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Signatures directory when i edit create signatures in Mail's preferences.

When i uncheck "Documents & Data" in System Preferences for iCloud the .mailsignature files are written.

I guess it is a migration / upgrade problem for Mail on this OS X user account since i have no problem on my other Mac with it and also no problem on the same Mac using a fresh OS X user account.

I have the same problem, but I'd rather not go through the hassle of creating another account and moving the data. If anyone has other suggestions, please let me know.

If you have this problem, I found a workaround.

    1. turn off iCloud Documents & Data

    2. create/modify a signature or saved mailbox

    3. turn on iCloud Documents & Data

Pigg's much simpler solution worked for me. Thanks for that!

I had to do the following to restore the signatures and mail rules:

    1. Quit Apple Mail

    2. Turn of these settings: System settings / iCloud:

        [ ] Mail

        [ ] Documents & Data

    3. Copy the old Rules to the new location:

        cd /Users/phil/Library/Mail/V2/MailData

        cp "/Volumes/TimeMachine/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/phil/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/RulesActiveState.plist" .

        cp "/Volumes/TimeMachine/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/phil/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/SyncedRules.plist" .

        cp "/Volumes/TimeMachine/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/phil/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/SyncedRules.plist" UnsyncedRules.plist

        cp "/Volumes/TimeMachine/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/phil/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/MessageRules.plist" .

        rm -rf Signatures

        cp -r "/Volumes/TimeMachine/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/phil/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Signatures" .

    4. Restart Apple Mail. The old rules and newly copied rules are both there. So I deleted the old rules.

    5. System settings / iCloud:

        [ ] Mail

        [x] Documents & Data

    6. As old rules moved mails to wrong mailboxes I had to identify these old wrong mailboxes and apply the restored rules to them.

If Apple Mail didn't find the old (wrong) mailboxes it created it new and placed the emails in there. So no emails were lost!
