Q: How do I get a p.w. to unlock my itouch backup?

Oh, happy morning.

I backed up my itouch so I could update the software. I tried to re-install and I'm asked for the password that will unlock my iPod backup. I don't have such a password. Tried every Apple p.w. I have many times. Nothing works. I've still got the "Enter Password" box open. I finally gave up and selected make this a new itouch, or some such command. It did and is all empty and up-to-date. I'd like to get to my old files now and reload them.

Thank you from Frustrationville.

    Hi mendopen!

It sounds like you used the encrypted backup feature when you made a backup of your iPod:

    iTunes: About iOS backups

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4946

    iTunes and encrypted backups

You can protect your backup with a passcode using the Encrypt Backup option in the Summary pane. Encrypting your backup will back up your Keychain. This way, email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some applications will be remembered when you transfer to a new device. Learn how tocreate and restore from a backup.

When your backup is encrypted, you'll need to enter the password when enabling or disabling encryption or when restoring from this backup.

Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.

If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

    Hi Braden,

Thanks so much for the help. That's what happens when you don't know what you're doing and don't slow down. Good news is, my itouch is a lot faster now.
