Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

    • iTunes
    • Apple Software Update
    • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
    • Bonjour
    • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

    Please note:

Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

Turingtest2, you are my new hero! :-)

Thanks for you instructions, which worked perfectly. I was sweating over this error message.

    Cheers man, Per

Thank you turingtest2.  Man, what a fracus!  Very frustrating.  Makes me less of an Apple fan than I was before.  I have a Dell PC with 64-bit Vista.  My wife has an iMac, and I am our main IT guy.  Give me a PC every time!

Anyway, First I did a system restore to a time just before the attempted upgrade, then I downloaded and saved the iTunes download.  While downloading, I went to Control Panel > Programs and Features and deleted iTunes and everything else that said "Apple ..."  After the new iTunes downloaded I did a restart on the computer.  Then I crossed my fingers and double-clicked on the download.  It worked flawlessly.

Now I'm gonna go ride my motorcycle!

    GO SEAHAWKS!!

Worked great!  Followed instructions and rebooted system - it worked. It's 22 degrees outside and snowing - not going to ride my motorcycle!.

    Thanks again.

Hi, tt2. As indicated, the Apple Mobile Device Support can't be removed. A message popped up "Fatal error during installation". What do you mean by "press on" in your detailed instructions? Thanks.

Proceed to the next step... It should still work out in the end.
