Q: update 11.1.4 won't install on my laptop.  Now I can't get iTunes to work at all.

Update 11.1.14 gave me an error message saying that I should download it and then try to install it manually.  I can't seem to do that either.  Now iTunes won't open at all.  What do I do now?  Have I lost everything I had loaded on iTunes?

What happens if you just proceed to the next step of the process? For many users it all works out once they reboot and reinstall iTunes.

I was also getting this error 7 after trying to install the latest update on my windows 7 system.  I tried several fixes, but then I went to my control panel, chose Recovery and opened System Restore and chose a restore point that was midnight of 1/24/14 (about 39 hours in the past).  I ran the System Restore and voila!    Everything works again!  When I opened iTunes, it asked me if I wanted to download iTunes 11.1.14 and I said NO.

I am so glad I thought of the System Restore -- it is a lot easier than uninstalling multiple programs in my book.

I was able to get Apple Mobile Device Support to uninstall after uninstalling Bonjour (and a few reboots in between trying other steps, and following the steps above in turningtest2's advice). Once that was gone and after another reboot I was able to get the latest update to install. So far, aside from also having to reboot our AppleTV everything seems to be working normally. Though I haven't tried syncing my iPhones or iPad yet...

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

    iTunes

    Apple Software Update

    Apple Mobile Device Support

    Bonjour

    Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

Like many others have stated already, my iTunes update failed last night and I spent the better part of today wrestling with the problem until the solution presented by turingtest2 proved to be effective.

My question now is WHAT HAPPENED???  Does iTunes have any idea what caused this update to fail?  Has that problem been addressed?

In short, what happens the next time I update iTunes??  Am I going to have to uninstall each and every Apple program on my computer every time there's a new version of iTunes??

I would trust not. I have had to do it once before with iTunes in the past, and have taken similar measures many times in the past to fix complex issues with, for example, Microsoft Office. Worst case scenario for some issues is a complete rebuild of the operating system. To err is human, to really screw things up use a computer.

I also was not able to update last night and now it won't let me uninstall any of the Apple programs we were told. I'm getting rather frustrated. Does anyone know why it won't uninstall? Or how to go back to the older version.

Try again, working through all the steps listed in HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. Try to ignore any error messages that crop up along the way, and if a particular uninstall rolls back just move on to the next one. You should be able to get to the point that you've uninstalled all that you can. Reboot. Ignore any error on reboot. Then attempt to install iTunes from the current download page. It ought to work. Good luck...
