Q: Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.

In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

C'mon Pete, don't be shy, share your knowledge, that's what these forums are for & I've even asked nicely.

As you've pointed out I'm obviously stupid & incapable of working such things out for myself.

I mean, you're always so helpful telling folks to remember the terms of use & to stay on-topic & to leave the thread.

Here I am asking you a legitimate on-topic question, seeking a helpful answer & you're not letting on.

    That's hardly fair is it?

This thread has ceased to be helpful, due to the unpleasantness of a single poster.  I have reported this person for violating the rules of this site, and suggest that others do as well if they feel that this poster is acting in a demeaning manner to them and their posts. Just click the "Report Post" button at the bottom of each post to do so.

This site should be open to all.  It does not belong to anyone, especially someone who seems intent of running up a post count by replying with the same "advice" ad infinitum.  I, and others, have asked him to cease acting as if he controls this thread.   For our trouble we have been dismissed by him as being, in some way, unable to comprehend his points, often rudely.  Every time I get a notification that there are new posts here, all I read is unpleasant back-and-forth between him and someone seeking help.  That is not what this forum is about.  The latest (above) was the last straw for me.  A person asked a reasonable question about how workflow has been improved and got a major load of snark in return.

If enough people use the Report Post button, perhaps this thread will again be helpful.  Until that time, I fear it will not.

If you ask a specific on-topic question/s I am happy to answer. But you are just flaming the topic and have given nothing to the topic. Be more specific with your questions, please.

    Thanks

    Pete

And, again, you act as if you are the mod in charge of this thread.  I am not "flaming" the topic.  I have asked nothing of you  (here.  Previously, I asked you to tone down your posts).  I am being quite specific.  I have no desire to get into yet another discussion with you, as you only have two things to say: get off the thread because you are off topic, or report your concerns to Apple.  So, instead, I have gone through the past 15-20 pages, picked out the posts in which you were rude/demeaning/intemperate to posters, and reported those posts with the explanation about you given above.  You can give all of the help you want (and some of your posts HAVE been helpful), but the majority of your posts come across in a bullying manner.  Read the responses from others to your posts and you will see this is not just my opinion.

I would suggest to others, who feel as though they have been flamed (to use his term) by petermac87, to report the specific posts in which he has seemed to personally attack you.  Adam, you are merely the latest, and his response to you was the one that finally pushed me to start reporting inappropriate postings.  I found at leat 6-8 posts going back about 15 pages where petermac87 used inappropriate language, told people to leave the thread, or otherwise acted as if he, and he alone, was in charge of this thread.  The only way to stop this behavior is by filing reports when you feel that he is acting in an inappropriate manner towards you or others.  Apple mods will then have a choice as to ignore the reports, issue a warning, or take other action(s).  In the meantime, anyone who posts here is at risk of having their intelligence demeaned or of being ordered to get off the thread.

But you can open a folder in a new window pressing the ⌘ key when you double click on the folder.

Yes, and if Amazon don't have the book I want I can always drive 25 miles to a bookshop - but that isn't very convenient either. It's a loss of functionality on a very basic part of the operating system which requires re-learning a frequently-used procedure that for many of us is so ingrained as to be unconscious, with another procedure that is  less convenient (needs both hands) for no gain whatever.

    HERE IS THE ANSWER:

You can in these 3 ways:

    1. command click folder

2 turn on right button clicking for the mouse in system pref. Then right click for sub menu and "open in new window"

    3. Close sidebar. right click tool bar in window and "hide". NOW YOU CAN DOUBLE CLICK TO OPEN.

These have all been addressed numerous times. I know it's a rather long topic, but a person entering a topic should read it before posting so you don't repeat what has already been covered many times.

    1) Until Mavericks, you haven't had to hold down a modifier key to open in a new window with the sidebar/toolbar open. That's the entire point of this topic. One hand operation of new folders with these options visible, not two.

    2) Works, though slow compared to just double clicking. Even slower if you're like me and always assign the mouse wheel/scroll button as a double click. I can't remember the last time I physically double clicked anything. I always use the wheel button (Logitech mouse).

    3) Again, not what the OP wants. He's always had these open, and wants them open. I also already explained in full how to hide the bars, which will allow it to work that way.

The first two were meant only in summary, sorry if this causes you issues. I read the first pages looking for the answer because obviously we were all in the same boat. Yes #1 & #2 had been mentioned and don't work for me either.

So then I went to the last page and seen nothing but people complaining about someone elses post, so thought maybe #3 had not been mentioned. So I did so just in case, since I would personally prefer to be able to double click to open on a regular basis, and open the tools when needed. Not perfect just thought it was closer.

Sorry I did not see your post, but trying to being helpful with an answer after checking those at the beginning and the end, and taking 15 minutes to cover all 29 pages is two different things.

I do see #1 mentioned directly above and you not policing them, so I'm not sure why you decided you needed to address me specifically. Ironically I normally don't add answers for this very reason. I found it, moments ago, and since I did not see the answer here earlier I thought I would be good enough to come back and tell people, because I would want someone to do the same for me.....so much for good will.

sorry if this causes you issues.

Nope, just sayin'. As I said, it is a long topic and the reaction for most people is, "Ugh. I don't have time to sift through every post." I had read the first eight pages fully, then kind of started skimming for the same reason; time.

so I'm not sure why you decided you needed to address me specifically.

Nothing against you personally, or you at all. It could have been anyone repeating steps which have already been stated at least three or four times.

Exactly!  Works just as described.  So, I don't understand what ever one is lamenting about here about not being able to open into a new window.  By unchecking this option,  get a new window as described.  Cmd+double tap (on my magic trackpad).  So simple.  Highlight two folders, and get two windows, one for each folder. Cmd+T will give me new tabs. Cmd+N will give me a new windows. What else is there that people lament about here?  And yes, this is all being done in Mavericks.

Yes, we all know holding the Command key while double clicking will open a nested folder without closing the parent folder. That's not the point of this topic.

The point is that you never had to hold a modifier key with the sidebar or toolbar open to perform this action before Mavericks. If you know of a way to do that, the OP would be very pleased.

The single most useful tip here is hiding the sidebar and toolbar.  When working out of the simplified windows, folder behavior again corresponds to my neurally-fixed mouse and finger actions.  I do find the sidebar useful, and miss having it available no matter where I might find myself in my folder hierarchy, but I can enjoy about 75% of its functionality by keeping open a window or two with it showing.

It's too bad Apple decided to replace one option with another instead of making it another choice. Long topics like this do catch their attention, though they don't respond to them. So you still may see a change to Mavericks which brings back this feature.
