So Apple Mobile Device Support won't uninstall... just ends up running the progress bar backwards... no error message, no clue provided on what the problem was. One post in another thread says to move on to the next program and another post says to try "Repair", multiple times if necessary. In other words, just try random stuff until it works...Lazy work Apple!

    Or...

Try using the slightly more detailed process outlined in HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. It may help to use safe mode if you find yourself unable to remove any of the folders recommended in the instructions.

There's a Microsoft FixIt for uninstallation problems which I had to run before I could proceed.

For people still  in trouble: heres the link for WinRAR to open the Apple installer http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm and to the Microsoft FixIt http://support.microsoft.com/mats/program_install_and_uninstall/en

Thanks tt2 and others for the advice and support.

Thank you so much turingtest2! This worked perfectly for me and took nearly no time at all.

Also to those who are afraid that by doing this you will lose your library, you will not. Mine is all there.

    Thanks again!

    Thank's turingtest2

    It worked for me !

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

    • iTunes
    • Apple Software Update
    • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
    • Bonjour
    • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

Way to go Apple ! Very nice update... :-(

I experienced the missing MSVCR80.dll file issue yesterday after attempting an update.  After repeated attempts at downloading (logged on as Administrator) and aborted installations I gave up for the day.  Today I started by deleting all Apple components through Control panel and then going to the download site.  Just before starting the download I disabled my Norton firewall and anti-virus.  The download and install went off without a hitch.  Not sure if this will help others, but wanted to post it anyway because of my string of failures yesterday.  My laptop runs Windows XP.

Anyone who suggests disabling your firewall, without at least checking to see if you are directly connected to the internet, is a complete idiot.

It is VERY dangerous to disable firewalls and antivirus.

On a Windows System check what your IP address is by performing this check:

    Start -> Run

type "cmd" (or "cmd.exe" or "command" on some older systems) in the box

    then type "ipconfig    /all"

you will see something that looks like this in part:

    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.5(Preferred)

    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

    Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, January 25, 2014 8:11:13 PM

    Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Monday, January 27, 2014 8:31:18 AM

    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

You are far safer if the IPv4 address begins with 192.168 as it does here. If it doesn't begin with 192.168 I would not disable any firewall for anyone without disconnecting from the network.

Don't forget to re-enable it immediately after performing the necessary steps.

    Many thanks turingtest2.

I also had this problem after myiTunes update failed.  I followed your instructions and it restored my iTunes fine.

I was very pleased to see that my iTunes Library was still in place after your instructions.

Thank you very much.   It sounds like your advice is helping a lot of people at the moment.
