Jan 12, 2014 11:00 PM in response to nicosenby F112358,After reading most of this thread, all I can say is I'm glad I have NONE of these problems.
Why?
Well, I just upgraded my MacBookPro, circa 2012, to Mavericks.
I have a Samsung SmartTV 40" LCD. with built in Ethernet, and WiFi. It can directly connect to the internet, and is loaded with dozens of apps, like Netflix, and YouTube, and Pandora, and Gmail. All things you can connect to even without a computer. You can connect a USB keyboard and a mouse to the TV. They are adding new apps all the time. Some free, some subscription like Huluplus. The TV updates it's own software, and probably firmware too, automatically over the internet.
I therefore direct connect the TV to the internet service provider's cable modem.
I also direct connect the Ethernet of the MacBook. I don't use WiFi unless I leave the house with it and I can find a free connection.
Then, I direct connect the Thunderbolt mini-DVI port to an HDMI port of the TV. I had never done that before, as I just bought the right adapter and cable.
Both Mac and TV sync to each other at the higest HD possible. If I don't want the Mac to go to sleep, I don't let it go to sleep. That is a setting, people.
It doesn't go to sleep during video playback, anyway.
And best of all, the reason it all works, is because in the System Preferences / Displays, the Mac recogizes the Samsung, and gives every concievable configuration options if I want to tinker with it, which I haven't done because why mess with it if it's already flawless?
I couldn't be happier. In my opinion Samsung makes the best TVs both in terms of connectivity and picture quality. And they're often on sale at Walmart.
Mine was a leftover model.
Why use a cheap display as a monitor, when the best SmartTVs aren't really that expensive anyway. Saves hundreds of dollars worth of headaches, if you ask me.
That's all...

Jan 13, 2014 11:14 PM in response to schreibersby John Willsey, schreibrs - I think you have an issue I saw others with. search "Force RGB mode in Mac OS X" and check out the top thread on ireckon.

Jan 13, 2014 11:18 PM in response to nicosenby John Willsey,I just found a new twist to this. First, both macpro and macbookpro have the issue. black screen after sleep, then the monitor goes in/out of power saver moded with black screen. I enabled screen sharing via vnc in the system preferences. this last time it happened, i tried to connect via vnc to the black screen system and was presented a user login. I logged in to my user name which had a check mark indicatign an existing desktop session and vnc was disconnected. Then I connected again with VNC and saw no checkmark, but it let me log in. I believe the window server is crashing as once I got in, I was able to shut down fusion but not use it and most of my other apps re-launched to where they were automatically.
If others could try/test, that would be great to confirm this "progress". about to try the hibernatemode trick as well....

Jan 24, 2014 5:24 AM in response to John Willseyby RickerM,have had this issue for a few weeks, a little uncomfortable trying g8k3pr solution, not because of his great work, but because I don't know what I'm doing enough to feel comfortable with his app. I tried to run it and got an message that I couldn't.
After MUCH time on multiple calls with Apple, the senior support guy had me send some file that shows my system to his engineering dept. We've tried the SMC and PRAM resets, reinstalled the OS and a few other resets and deleting of files he instructed me to do during a screen share session.
They called back to say they think it is the TB cable, so I have to take entire TB to Apple store for them to swap. As I mentioned, I'm no expert, but this all started with the Mavericks update so I am highly suspect of how a cable makes any difference.
I'll report back when I know more.

Jan 25, 2014 1:33 AM in response to RickerMby Stjerne,RickerM, you could save yourself a lot of time by being comfortable with using the solution from g8k3pr. I am a techie and his explanation makes sence.
In my workplace - a huge media company - we have more than 600 macs. The ones running Maverick and Thunderbolt displays ALL have the problem, and we solved it with the solution from g8k3pr.
His solotion is simple and will not change the performance of the Mac in any way.
When Apple seniors sends you shopping for a new cable it just tells me, that they have no idea of the problem and the root cause. And that worries me.

Jan 25, 2014 5:03 AM in response to Stjerneby One of the users,Stjerne, you're rigth on the money - it worries me too. Is that the indication of direction Apple is taking these days? Forget quality, just go for quantity - sell, sell, sell...

Jan 25, 2014 5:16 AM in response to Stjerneby RickerM,I am not optimistic-can't see how a software update leads to the bad cable theory. They kept my display to "diagnose" the problem. I will try his solution when I get it back, I'll just need some help from the group in running it. Thanks for all the help.

Jan 25, 2014 6:00 AM in response to RickerMby Brian Mull,TThat solution is an easy one to run, but unfortunately, it did nothing for me.

Jan 25, 2014 6:14 AM in response to RickerMby skiphunt,I can say that after Apple phone support, trying all the smc resets etc. & replacing the TD 3 times from Best Buy & them trying to blame my MBP instead, the g8k3pr hibernatate setting change finally & absolutely took care of it. I've also not seen any change in performance.

Jan 27, 2014 5:58 AM in response to skiphuntby RickerM,Well, Apple store has had my TB since Friday, haven't heard a peep from them yet, at the store they told me I'd probably hear something Sunday or today; not enjoying being at the actual office working on MBP screen. I think I am getting close to a crossover on the time I've spent on this times my hourly rate being equal to a new display!

Jan 27, 2014 1:56 PM in response to RickerMby RickerM,Apple Store just called and can't replicate the situation; they claim to have opened a new MB Air, have let it sit for 9 hours twice and it wakes up like it is supposed to. They have asked me to bring in my MBP and let them see if they can replicate the "non-waking" that way.

Jan 27, 2014 3:12 PM in response to RickerMby Brian Mull,Would it work if I bought a dedicated thunderbolt cable, and attached it from the air to the display and did not use the thunderbolt cable hard wired into the display? Wanted to check before I ran out to buy one to see if I could get the display running again.

Jan 28, 2014 10:17 AM in response to g8k3prby nickcc20,sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
g8k3pr - This worked for me. Thanks. The TBD not waking was driving me crazy!

Jan 29, 2014 9:57 AM in response to nickcc20by RickerM,Somehow, in the parrallel universe of the Apple Store they kept my MBP and TB, let it sleep overnight and....viola, it worked fine, they "can't reproduce" my "claim", ***?! In any event, since I had three videos of it on the desktop behaving as I "claimed" they went ahead and replaced the cable. I'll know Friday morning if that made any difference, if not I am running the pmset app.
I can't imagine why without fail every sleep/wake cycle since Mavericks would not wake the TB in my office, but magically it is fine at store.

Jan 31, 2014 4:27 AM in response to RickerMby RickerM,Cable change did nothing; just ran Set Sleep Mode, will see what happens Tuesday morning.
