Signed up here to thank tt2 for the help.Don't know how you know this stuff, but thanks very much! This kind of problem with what should be a simple update is aggravating to say the least, but I followed your original instructions and I've got full access again with nothing lost or changed.

I too had the exact symptoms described of iTunes not installing, then the previous version no longer working, and then receiving the message that MSCVR80.dll was missing! It was very frustrating when you are not really sure of what you are doing or computer savy enough not to panic!! I tried various things on my own like retrying the installation, deleting iTunes and rebooting a number of times, downloading a Windows link that would re-install the MSCVR80.dll all to no avail. I was even set to try a system restore when I came across this thread and solution suggested by turingtest2 detailing all the other things that needed to be uninstalled as well. It worked perfectly so thanks for that!! As for Apple, perhaps they should run their updates past turingtest2 first or better still make sure their upgrades work! As of right now, I see about 8 000 people have come here to view this thread so obviously there is a widespread problem. Truth be known, iTune upgrades have always seemed pretty hit and miss over the years as to how smoothly they install. Come on Apple, you can do better! Anyway, thanks to turingtest2 from a frustrated iTunes user here in Canada!

Wow, thank you so much.  It is a shame that we have to search for an answer to this when Apple put out the iTunes Update and caused it in the first place.  You were right on target with your directions.  I think I will never do any update again since this is the second time I have had to come to the message boards to find a solution to Apple's iTune update problem.

I downloaded WiNrar and program to install and uninstall itunes. I uninstalled my old program and started to install but it still stopped at starting services and gave me the message "service "apple mobile device " failed to start"

Am I supposed to do something with winrar. I opened but only got a list of files.

I am still stuck. Not really a computer whiz

    thanks for any help

Hey I finally got an older vesion of itunes to work!!! 10.7  x64 for windows 7
After uninstalling all apple products even  quicktime
I had to delete everything from (program files, and program  files x64, program data,)
And all downloads from apple, and I went in to search deleted  other stuff from apple, and itunes
But definently not my itunes library and Playlist
Down loaded 10.7 x64 for windows 7, but checked (do not start  when done)
Then I emptied my recycling bin and restarted my  PC
I ran geek tech tool box same as reg cure pro, also PC Tools  registry cleaner, and CC Cleaner
Then I emptied my recycling bin and restarted my  PC
And wallah... It finally works, and I Love the older version  anyways.
Easier to download and transfer  music!!!!!

Thank you so much.  I had this identical problem today & was ready to call an expensive mobile computer tech to fix it.  I'm not very computer savvy, and didn't feel confident I could do this on my own.  But I followed your instructions to the T, and it worked!  I'm shocked.  You saved me a ton of money.  Thank you so much.  Also, my library is still there for anyone afraid to try this.  The only thing I'd add to Lou Bug's instructions is I couldn't find a way to right click & "run as administrator" in the normal download window that popped up for me. But when I went into the download file and found the Apple exe file, there I could right click and "run as administrator." Otherwise, his instructions were perfect for a novice like me.  Thank you again!
