Q: "MSVCR80.dll Missing"

iTunes no longer starts on my PC the message is: this program cannot start  "MSVCR80.dll Missing".   This program has operated well for months and I have made no alterations other than attempting to install the latest update, what should I do?

I googled and read a number of ways of solving the MSVCR80.dll missing - none of them worked.

Finally, I uninstalled everything from my installed Programs which indicated it was owned by APPLE:

    *Itunes

    *Apple Software Update

    *Apple Mobile Device Support

    *Bonjour

    *Apple Application Support

    *Icloud

    *Quicktime

    *Safari

    *MobileMe Control Panel

I am wondering whether the culprit might be Bonjour - in attempting to uninstall I received a message saying that I was unable to do this as the program MSVCR80.dll needed to be closed.  I was given the option of ignoring this message which fortunately I did and Bonjour was uninstalled.

After uninstalling all APPLE programs, I shut down my computer.  Upon restarting, I was successful in reinstalling Itunes.

This is not the first time Apple has succeeded in stuffing up the computers of millions of people with one of their software updates.  This is very disappointing and I hope that in future the Apple technicians pay careful attention to what it is they are doing before they release updates to consumers.

Thanks for the advice. I tried just uninstalling Itunes to no avail. System restore was useless. Followed your advice and it worked brilliantly, even better my library was still intact. Was worried I'd lose it. Thanks again. Regards Paul

    Hi

Thanks for all the help on this.

Uninstalling all things Apple and reinstalling worked for me.

Just one more annoying experience with Apple following on from IOS7 and the ipad.

Think Apple and I are coming to the end of the road .

I removed all of the Apple programs on two PC's with the same problem.  I still couldn't install and received the same error message.  Finally, I tried reinstalling QuickTime first and followed that with another attempt to load iTunes.  This worked on both PC's.  Im thinking loading QuickTime restored the missing dll file.  I had even tried reinstalling Microsoft Visual C ++ Redistributable and that didn't solve the problem.

    otacon:

Thank you, this worked perfectly!! Now, my question is, if we downloaded the latest version of iTunes and now it works, what was in the update to make it not work?

I did this and was able to install itunes, but only my purchased music is there (about 300 of my 1500 songs!) - no playlists, etc.  Do you happen to know if I will I be able to sync everything that is on my ipod back onto the computer?

Fix described by tkbear posted January 27th at 10:23pm WORKS!  Yay and thankyouthankyou to tkbear.  I also uninstalled apple program Voice Over Kit along with all the other programs listed in tkbear's post.  Yes, i got the error message while unstalling Bonjour and ignored it, and the uninstall completed just fine.  And yes, after following tkbear's instructions, itunes installed fine with my library intact.  Thanks again, you just saved my music life!

    cheers from Cat
