Apple - you are starting to act like microsoft.  test your crap before you distribute.  I shouldn't have to unistall all your software and reinstall.

Never had a problem updating iTunes - until tonight.  I received the same messages as others: MSVCR80.dll not found; iTunes was not installed correctly Please reinstall iTunes Error 7 (Windows Error 126). I tried reinstalling as well as fixing with a reinstall - all to no avail.  I am not comfortable with removing everything and trying for a new installation. For that matter, why should I.  Apple needs to address this widespread problem!

You are right ageorge8!  I went the uninstall/reinstall route and now I am missing 1,200 songs.     So upset!

If I reinstall iTunes will I lose all my songs?

Like you I also have the MSVCR80.dll was not

found.  In addition, the second message tells

me to reinstall iTunes Error 7 (Windows error 126).

Does anyone know if a person reinstalls iTunes

they will retain their songs or what?

    g.50cab.

Amen to that. How could they send something out like this that screws up everybody with Windows 7...which, to date, is still Microsoft's top OS for PC's.

Apple...you guys out there? Anybody listening? Are you working on an updated update?

My system was working perfectly until that little iTunes update prompt came along Sunday night.

    Thanks Apple....

    BeachNanny,, you asked

" if we downloaded the latest version of iTunes and now it works, what was in the update to make it not work?"

My assumption is that the problem was not in the update itself but was due to a faulty former installation of the Apple Mobile Device Support  driver. Many of us noticed that that one could not gracefully uninstall anymore. The update procedure does notice that and abort before completing, leaving iTunes in an incoherent state. The full uninstall allow to switch in a different install behavior that reestablish everything.

Your songs are held in a separate ITunes Media folder so should not be affected.

Likewise your Library file, which I recently found to my cost should be regularly backed up.

I had the same 'problem' with uninstalling Apple Mobile Device Support.

However, when I rebooted after uninstalling all the recommended Apple programmes, I found that it had uninstalled after all.

It looks as though your Library file has been lost. I had this problem the other day and realised I should have backed it up. When this happens iTunes creates itself a new Library file which only contains stuff you purchased from iTunes.

In your iTunes folder you should find an old version of this file (in the folder "Previous iTunes Libraries") and you can rename your 'duff' Library file (iTunes Library.itl) to something like "iTunes Library corrupt.itl", copy or move an old Library file (eg.iTunes Library 2013-11-21.itl), into the folder where your corrupt file was found, rename it "iTunes Library, itl" and all should be well! You will then just need to add in your more recent purchases to your Library.

Because all the songs are in a separate Media folder (usually "iTunes Media"), they will still be available once you've restored your Library.
