Q: Mavericks and Outlook - repeated download of same emails

Since my Mavericks upgrade my outlook 2011 download duplicate emails that have already been received.  I rebuilt my identity database and it did not help.  I am on Outlook 14.3.8 (Outlook 2011).  Does anyone know how to either fix this issue permanently or roll back the Mavericks upgrade?

Dear jakeworld (and everyone else contributing to this discussion)...

I have the same problem: no error message, just (in my case intermittent) downloading of all the email s on my server. I have tried all of the changes suggested here (except switching from POP to IMAP) to no avail. I am thus stumped. I am hesitant to switch from POP to IMAP, as at least one contributor was already using IMAP and still had problems. As there are other issues with Maverick still, I am strongly tempted to revert to Snow Leopard and wait for Maverick to have all the bugs fixed before upgrading again.

Interestingly, I just called my ISP -- not one of the big players -- and they are rewriting their software to correspond with recent upgrades in operating systems, and take full responsibility for the problem. They are working on fixing it (of course) but can't tell me definitively when that will be. The dates of their updates correspond with my intermittent downloads of all emails, so it does seem that in my case they ARE the culprits.

Good luck with that all the people having issues with this same problem have different ISPs This issue is between how Outlook deals with Maverick something between those two are resetting the flag as to the last email that was downloaded. I have been downloading to Outlook for years and have not had the problem until the Maverick update. Also my Outlook duplicated my Comcast POP mail and my Outlook.com POP mail the only mail it did not duplicate was my Gmail account which was setup as an IMAP account. I wish you luck but I do not think your ISP will solve your problem. The only fix I see is Apple fixing the issue with Maverick or changing to IMAP.

Bcutty -- I really want to be optimistic and trust that my ISP will solve the problem, but I suspect that you are right. My gmail account is  unaffected, which is in keeping with your observations. Sigh. Nothing I can do, as far as I can tell: that is the upshot.

I work in an office of about 50 people and I have about 5 people with this issue. Most of the office is on PC.s, but the 5 with these issues are on MACs 2 are using Apple Mail and 3 are using Outlook 2011. We have Time Warner at the office, but they say it happens when they take their MACs home using AT&T, Time Warner, and Windstream. So Im at a loss. The only common ground is they are using MACs.

The "app nap" solution worked for me, and I have not had any further problems. I am using MacBook Pro, on Yahoo's pacbell.net, and Ms Outlook.

That did not work for me. I am using MAC Book Air on Maverick operating system, Comcast ISP, Comcast mail , Outlook.com mail, Att.net Mail, and Gmail all downloading to MS Outlook the ones that duplicated were all POP3 once I changed everything to IMAP no problem going well for over 2 weeks

I wonder whether your company is using Exchange while at work, but POP or IMAC when away from the work connection?  Also, perhaps everything is getting synced twice due to folks using iCloud for their work accounts? I'm guessing, but those are the areas I'd be looking into. iCloud sync is a strange animal. I have it on for some things and off for others. When I first set up iCloud, I had it on for everything and it was a mess of duplicates, but not the really same problem that we've discussed here.

I tried the app nap approach about 24 hours ago and so far so good. Thanks!

I am with BT  and have had the same issues with multiple duplicate emails downloading to my mac's. This only started when i upgraded to Maverick and it happened on my 2 imacs and 2 macbook pro's all running outlook 2011.

I was tearing my hair outt trying to get an explanation from apple and from my ISP with no confirmed answer to resolve the issue. I downloaded all the updates and they didnt help either.

But im glad to say i have now resolved my problem on all machines.

I have left it approx 3 weks before posting this message should the problem occur again and it hasn't.

This requires uninsalling Outlook and reinstalling it.

Firstly i backed up my outlook 2011 by going to.

File and then export. Outlook for DataFile(olm)  Making sure items of the following type is ticked and all boxes are ticked. Next.

Select , Do Not delete items. Next.

Save the backup to a safe folder (olm file)  where you can restore it from after reinstallation of Office.

Once backed up i used the software clean my mac to clean all traces of microsoft office and any database files it finds.

I then went into my Documents folder and found a Microsoft folder that clean my mac did not remove.Put this in the trash but don't delete.

The reason for this  was that when reinstalling, if the folder is left in Documents,  Microsoft office will try to reinstall to this default folder and the problems occur again. We need to let Microsoft office setup a clean new default folder.

    Now reinstall Microsoft office.

    Once installed.

Go to File. Import. Outlook Data File (Pst or olm) Next.

Click Outlook for Mac DataFile (olm) Next

Then navigate to where you stored your backed up olm file and restore.

This should put all your saved emails rules folders and contacts back into an archive file from there you can transfer them out and back into the new inbox file as it was before you reinstalled.

I  then had to set up new rules to my inividulal client inboxes.

I hope this helps. It worked for me. Sorry its so long winded but i have tried to explain it step by step.

    In Summary:

    Backup.

    Uninstall and reinstall Office.

Get rid of default Microsoft Folder in Documents.

    Reinstall Office.

    Restore backup.

If everything runs well you can delete the old Microsoft Default folder.

Hello All, this is my first post, but having had the same issues described here and having resolved it, I thought I would advise how.  First of all it started for me with outlook telling me that it needed access to my keychain, that I allowed.  I then started receiving stream of emails I had previously read.  (I have a hosted exchange email account with a number of aliased addresses).  I wonder if a common factor is multiple email accounts?

The answer lay in tools/ schedule.  What happened is that it was re running a send/ receive for all accounts again.  what I did was delete the send/ receive schedules for all but my exchange account and voila - the **** was plugged.  until next time. I hope this helps.

Shands252, it happened to me with only one account set up. Since having the original problem (now fixed), I've added two more accounts. Haven't had any issues with any of them. I checked my schedules, and am not seeing duplicate send/receive rules as you saw.

Terry - THANK YOU!  I have been going crazy with my 2008 version of Entourage downloading messages 10x a day until I moved them to "archive."   I was able to follow your detailed instructions (the first set I couldn't make work) and for the first time in 1 month (since upgrading to Maverick) I am finally not getting duplicates galore.  I am soooo happy!!    I really appreciate your work around.  Have a great day!!

This worked for me. Do you have any issues with your battery running out a lot sooner now?
