Q: Messages says "XXXXX is not registered with iMessage"

iMac14,2

MacOS 10.9.1

All of the sudden I can't send any messages on my iMac. It was working about a week ago. No update to the OS has happened since then. Every email address and phone number now says "XXXXX is not registered with iMessage." Old conversations that are months old suddenly aren't updated and I can't send another message. I can't initiate new conversation because of the error. I can't even send a message to myself from the iMac (works fine from my iPhone). Just to be clear, these contacts are wtihout a doubt registered with iMessage. I'm not trying to send an iMessage to my grandma's 2004 flip phone. Messages/iMessage still works on my iPhone 5S, iPad 3, MacPro at home, and MacBook Pro. I've tried disabling and signing out of the account and signing back in. The best result I got from that is the "To:" field turning blue, as it does when sending to a registered iMessage address, only to then turn red, as it does when it thinks the address is not registered.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I saw that thread. I've tried logging in and out and enabling and disabling the account, both together and seperate (logging out and disabling) with no luck. I've even deleted all my conversations. After reenabling the account I even get the messages on my other devices that my iMac is not using my number and email addresses for iMessage.

    Hi,

I have also just seen a Post where someone signed out of iCloud (it comes with many warnings about the different sync processes)

Although iCloud is not formally linked to iMessages (you can use different IDs and there is no setting to enable Messages for the System Preferences > iCloud item) this person did post it was successful for them.

Just tried it. I had high hopes too. Sounds like one of those weird things that would fix it but no luck again. I even tried signing out and disabling the account in messages first. This is the weirdest problem. Still work fine on my MacPro and Macbook Pro that are using the same iCloud account and AppleID.

    HI,

You seem to have isolated it down to the Mac version.

(I did find my wife was a red contact - not registered but when checking her iPhone found Messages was Off and only SMS was on)

In the Finder > Go Menu hold down the ALT key and select the Library that appears.

    Navigate to the Preferences.

Find the com.apple.imessages.bag.plist  (this one hold the server info)

Delete it (Drag to Trash) and Restart Messages.

    Hi,

Access the Library the same way again.

    This time navigate to Containers/com.apple.soagent/Data/Library/Preferences

Some in here are aliases and soem are Original .plists

    Delete com.apple.messageshelper.AccountInfoController.plist and com.apple.soagent.plist

And just like that. This morning it is all working again. My iMac was turned off all weekend and then lo and behold it is wroking now. No rhyme or reason.

I'm having the same issues as previously mentioned. I have both iPhone and iPad. I can send and receive messages from my son on iPhone, but iPad says he's not a registered user. Has to be a glitch in the most recent update on my iPad. That's the only thing that's changed in the past few days.

I was looking for a resolution to the exact same issue, I followed your directions deleting com.apple.soagent.plist//. I do have a question before proceeding any further, actually less of a question and more of a statement.. Those are Folders, not simply individual files, and this is what I shall delete?

I deleted the other FILE that you listed directly preceding com.apple.soagent.plist, in your instructions fyi. Once both the file and folders are gone, what next?

Hello Ralph, I am assisting my son here. I went to the Trash file to "undo" the moving of "Folders," then proceeded to follow your directions and remove the two files that you said to. Rebooted the computer, but he is still unable to send from his MacBookPro, his iPhone is fine.. I am going to bed now, I will check back in the morning. OS X 10.9.2

    Hi,

    I posted:-

Access the Library the same way again.

    This time navigate to Containers/com.apple.soagent/Data/Library/Preferences

Some in here are aliases and some are Original .plists

    Delete com.apple.messageshelper.AccountInfoController.plist and

    com.apple.soagent.plist

So yes, I listed the Folder path first and then listed two files (.plists) that I suggest you delete.

I have not said to delete the folder.

    Quit Messages if Open.

Restart the computer and then the Messages app and the folder, it contents and the .plist should be recreated.
