Q: iMessage on mac not working properly

Hello to the mac community!

I own an iPod touch and a MacBook pro with mountain lion.  iMessage on my iPod touch works perfectly (it always sends, always receive messages seamlessly, and all the messages are in chronological order within the conversation.) On my MacBook pro, it's all the contrary. Messages are sent only 50 percent of the time (I often get "failed to send" with an exclamation point and have to resend it. I may have o do this 3-3 times. Other times it may work in one try) Sometimes I receive messages on my mac after 15 minutes. Also, the messages on my mac are not in chronological order so I often have to look at my iPod to be able to read the conversation.

I checked. Both iPod and mac are on the same email address for iMessage. I do not get why it works perfectly on iPod and it kindda ***** on mac.

Anybody has this problem? Anybody knows how to fix the issue?

Cheers

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Hi:  Read through the original post and the replies.  Just bought a new macbook all updated software, and the exact same problems (delayed and out-of-order messages, problems sending on first try) exist.

It seems to me that Messages just doesn't work right despite the updates.

    Hi,

As Documented above the Blurb says "An Issue" that "May Cause' the Out of Order iMessages.

This suggests that there may be other issue that cause it.

Hi Guys, this is a fix that worked for me.

As mentioned you need to make sure that the imessage settings are identical in both your iOS and Mac. You also need to make sure that your phone number is active on your account (through the apple website).

The FIX is to delete messages in your messages folder on your hard drive. Here's how:

    • Quit out of Messages for Mac
    • Hit Command+Shift+G to bring up the “Go To Folder” window
    • Enter ~/Library/Messages/
    • Select all files in the Messages directory and move to trash, files will be named chat.db, chat.db-shm, chat.db-wal, etc
    • Empty the Trash and relaunch iMessages

This does not delete the existing messages nore does it remove your settings in iMessage (well it didn't for me). As soon as you relaunch everything should spring back to life.

    Good luck!

I have tried your tip and unfortunately cannot empty the trash bin, even after quitting the Messages app.

Any idea on why these files are still in use?

    Hi

I have not had a chance to test this as I save my Chats and Messages.

However if you have Save on Closure turned On then the Archive Folder within ~/Library/Messages will hold items that are listed in the Recent Items listings in Messages > File Menu > Recent Items.

This may mean they are "Active" even if moved to the Trash.

Finally got mine to work after WEEKS of trying, what i did was reset my time zone stuff, so even though it was set on "auto" i took it off auto and then set it for a wrong time zone and then turned on auto again so it had to reset it self. then after that i had to reset my keychain and finally it works.

Complaint reinstated. Why in the wide wide world of sports is this still a problem? This seems absurd that the lines of a conversation are completely out of order AND there seems to be no proven way to fix it. They have time stamps - why can't Apple add the appropriate code to place these in order? This makes no sense - at all.

    Had the folowing problem:

Side 1: Mac Mini and iPad1

Side 2: iPhone 4 and iPad Air

Side 3: iPhone 4s and Macbook Air

1 <-> 2 works perfect. Every message goes to all the devices.

1 <-> 3 works sometimes. Lot of red exclamation marks.

Found out there were problems when the Macbook was asleep. Messages didn’t get delivered when sleeping. When running, no problem.

Other observation: the Mac Mini had Bonjour turned on.

My solution, turn on Bonjour on the Macbook Air and (until now) every things seems to work. Messages get send to a sleeping Macbook and no messages are missed.

    Hi,

On the iPhone remove the Apple ID.

Then set the iPhone to Airplane mode for a few minutes to break with the server.

When back in the Messages app settings check the iPhone can send an iMessage to the Apple ID BEFORE you add it back as an option (Check the iPhone Number works).

If this works add back the Apple ID.

Restart the Mac version and accept any pop ups about the iPhone and the IDs it is using.
