Q: SOLUTION: Some Music Won't Play After Upgrading Your iPhone To iOS7

After upgrading to iOS 7, some of you, including me, started having an issue where some of your songs refuse to play on your iPhones and iPods. There was also a red square inside of a red circle next to the song which I guess, was adding to the problem of the songs not playing. I had no idea what the issue was, so I searched and searched but came out with no solution to this annoying problem. Until last night. I was just messing around in the settings app and discovered that it was neither iTunes 11 nor iOS 7 that was the cause of this problem. It's all a matter of how the settings in your iPhone or iPod are set up. Follow these instructions to get your songs working again!

Step 1: Go to the "Settings" app on your Springboard (iPhone or iPod)

Step 2: Scroll down to the "iTunes & App Store" category.

Step 3: Where it says "Automatic Downloads", turn off the "Music" slider.

Step 4: Sync and enjoy playing ALL of your music!

It took me a while to figure this out, but I'm glad that I can help you guys. Have a great day!

I last posted to this thread on Dec. 22 with many of the problems listed above.  I tried many of the solutions offered with no real success.  I still have gaps in my library and have in fact lost some other data performing restorations, etc. (albeit my own fault for not backing everything up)

In fact, I'm even noticing worst performance in my iPad which I did not tamper with at all, other than to stay current with all updates.  With all of my Apple devices, I have observed very noticeable buggy operation, sticky screens (stalls during wipe motions), app crashes, and incredible slowness overall.

Back to the topic of this thread...

The one striking thing that is hitting me about all of this is the glaring lack of response or bonafide solutions that should be offered by Apple support, in the month I've been checking in.

    Still hearing nothing but crickets!

...and I'm STILL holding off on making those new Apple purchases, based on this new and improved crappy operability dilemma that we all seem to be forced to resolve on our own, which appears to have been solely inflicted by Apple...

Those of us who have been loyal Apple users have done so due to ease of use and intuitive nature of the products, the need to not worry about viruses, and trust that Apple would not let anything be released until quality was assured.  It seems that this issue is pervasive, and that Apple has not owned up to it or even acknowledged it, and certainly have not come out with a fix.

I had the exact same thing. And changes I make on iTunes are not transferred to my iPhone.

Thanks.. it worked perfactly. 1,000 + songs moved over very fast. Now why could not Apple Support suggested this fix?

They had me sign on to their site, send them my apple phone id, go to my messages on my iphone  ckick on the text message that was sent to get some bogus instructions like upgrade itunes and turn off and on ny devices.

    What a goat redeo.......

    Apple Support you suck!

I realized what was wrong.  Silly me didn't have the Manually Sync This iPod box checked in the summary screen.  Thank you SO much for your input!

Thanks for the tip but after clearing out every song on my phone and reuploading I'm back to exactly the same spot I was before with red circles.

This is so frustrating.  No official word from Apple as far as I can see.

I just recieved notification that my phone is available for a free upgrade.  I think I'll get an S3 or 4 instead of another one of these.

    Hello,

I'm extremely disappointed in Itunes.  The first and primary function should be easily syncing my music collection, (downloaded and CD's), with my devices.  Should not be that difficult to do 2014!  Instead I've wasted hours trying to get this piece of garbage working.  (I'm an Electronic Engineer and am computer savy)  Here's what I did to get the red square/circles gone.

    • I had to remove and reinstall itunes because of a missing dll file.
    • For the red/square circles on my music, I was about to do a factory restore when I did this.
    • "Transfer Purchases from "xxx iPhone".
      • To get to this selection, you need the menu bar up in iTunes - press 'CTRL-B' if the menu bar is not up.
      • Select 'File' - 'Devices' - 'Transfer Purchases from "xxx iPhone" '.
    • Note:  The songs I purchased on iTunes were available on my iPhone, it was the ones that I imported from my CD collection that were not and had the red circle with a square inside.  I have no idea why this should've worked, since all these songs were still on my computer and in iTunes.

Even after all this, I'm unable to get changes made to my playlist to sync with my iPhone.

Apple - you're one of the largest corporations in the world - PLEASE FIX THIS PIECE OF TRASH SOFTWARE INTERFACE!  SYNCING MUSIC FROM ITUNES TO A DEVICE SHOULD BE EASY, NOT A SOURCE OF FRUSTRATION!

I was having this problem.  More and more songs (and audiobooks) appearing greyed out with the red circle/square.

I'm in IT and know how to find solutions but nothing I tried fixed this (and I tried many suggestions).

In desperations I took the nuclear option and did a factory reset.  Net result.  Instead of 1,700+ songs I had...75. The only songs remaining were the ones I purchased through iTunes.

At this point I gave up and decided that as soon as convenient I would simply replace my iPhone with an Android.

This week I was looking at my phone and...all the songs are back. I didn't change any settings, I didn't reset, they just reappeared as I charged my phone.  Speaking with my Sister-in-law today the same thing happened to her too.

So I'm really sorry for all those out there that are still suffering and I wish I had a solution to post for you but maybe the only advice I can offer is to do what I did and threaten the phone with an Andoid replacement.

Even though the songs came back the next phone for me will not be an Apple device. The only advantages the iPhone had was that it worked without a lot of fiddling (no longer true) and the connector fit the many docking stations around the house (the reason I bought a 4S instead of the 5) and also no longer true.

    Good luck everyone!

This "Solution" didn't work for me and after about 2 months scrolling through these forums I finally found a fix! I simply turned off the "Sync Music" checkbox on the "Music" tab in the page for the device on iTunes. I then checked the "Manually manage music and videos" box at the bottom of the device summary page, selected all of my music in my library and simply dragged it all to the device and the music is now all playable on my iPhone (with no duplicates, despite dragging all of my music onto the device). This was such an easy and annoyingly simple fix so hope it works for you too!

So I've had this problem numerous times and i know it's very VERY frustrating. I listen to music every single day and I was getting very angry that my music just wouldn't play and had that stupid red symbol. So after playing around with my iTunes many times (and i knew it was my iPhone 4s because my iPod successfully synced) I didn't want to restore my phone so I decided to do this and it worked

1.Connect your phone into your computer via USB cable and have iTunes open.

    2. Go into the music section on iTunes and uncheck sync music.
    3. Click "apply" and your music will start to delete off your phone (depending on how many songs you have, this may take a while).
4.Once you have no music left on your phone, check the sync music box and all of your music will re-download onto your phone.

Hopefully, this should solve your problem

So i have tried restoring my phone and it has done nothing. I have also tried transfering my purchases still nothing. I have also tried resyncing it and it didnt do me anything. In my iTunes library it tells me a lot of the songs can't be located. When i plug my phone into the computer, and I go under my phone file on itunes and go to "On This Phone" it shows all my Music. But when i try to play it, it comes up with an ! with a cirle around it and on my phone it still has the red circle around the red square and the letters are light gray. I have a lot of music from CD's, an app called "Music Player" (which i use to get music form MP3 Skull) and other people's iTunes and purchases of my own, but no matter what i try i cant get my music back onto my phone.

I'm having the same problem since updating to IOS7, music keep disappering and I have to put it back and after few sync, its disappeared again with exclamation point the left. Sadly APPLE must have read every thread about but they have no clue how to fix it.

Experiencing the same problem with my iPhone 4 (iOS 7.0.4) and have tried everything. I only manage my music manually and don't use the iTunes library at all but still get the red circle issue on various songs.

As an experiment I downloaded a 3rd party tool to add my music and the same problem occurred. I don't believe this is an iTunes issue but rather an ios7 problem.

Has anyone who is using iOS 7.1 betas experienced this problem? Want to know if there is light at the end of the tunnel!!
