If you have iWork '09, it's easy -- just drag the contacts to a Numbers Sheet. If you only have Numbers 3.1, it's not really supported and won't be easy.

In Numbers, in a table, select cell A1
Paste
Boom. Works great. Even brought in the pictures. Cool.

I wasn't aware of the new method and I really appreciate your posting it here. Can I ask where you learned the technique? Was it trial and error? I don't find a reference in the Help guide.
I see that it's also possible to paste to a blank area of a Sheet and a table will be created. This is pretty close to the drag and drop capability that Version 2.3 had.
